Saint Mary's hasn't acquired Baptist YET, although it's cruising through the approval process. But many people "in the know" are assuming that Saint Mary's will have to close a hospital once the merger takes place. Baptist has been losing money for years, and Knoxville's center core just isn't big enough to support all these gigantic hospitals: UT, Fort Sanders, Baptist, and Saint Mary's. So supposedly Saint Mary's will have to shutter either their main campus next to Fulton HS, or they'll shutter the Baptist Hospital campus across the river from downtown. I've heard many people assume that it'll be the Baptist campus that will close given that it'll probably be easier to sell to developers than Saint Mary's campus.
