Has anyone been to Rutledge?
We are looking for some property that we can eventually build on. Hoping to get 10 to 20 acres. Rutledge seems the most affordable. Does anyone know anything about the town?
Thanks
Steven

I drive through it a lot. It's a pretty little small town in farm country, the county seat for Grainger County.
There's a grocery store in town, a Hardees and a Subway are the only fast food places. There's a restaurant, a couple of car dealerships, doctors, gas stations. There's a newspaper, repair shops. Some of the houses are old and restored and quite attractive.
The main street is on Hwy. 11W which is an easy drive to Strawberry Plains and East Knoxville.
It's across the Lake Cherokee from Jefferson City but the road that goes there has a lot of twists and turns.

I agree with ^^ and I would also add that you must go the speed limit through Rutledge, or else! Grainger County is also home to the very best tomatoes in the world!

Keep in mind that most of Grainger County is hillside. This accounts for the lower prices on property (sez me.. who lives in one of the most expensive rural counties :-)

Grainger county east of Rutledge has some of the flatest land in East Tennessee. It's still pretty rolling, but the farms along there have some good sized fields that can be worked with plows. Used to be used for tobacco farming and you'll still see some small plots along 11W.
The Rutledge Marathon bills itself as the flatest marathon in the Southeast. It runs from Rutledge High School to Ritter Farms.

MMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grainger County tomatoes! Yum! The tomato festival is terrific. Wish me and the wife could have made it this year, but we moved back to TX a couple of weeks too early.
As far as the area, I know that it is a nice and pretty rural area to drive through. Not sure what else there is though as far as pros/cons go.

We recently moved in to the area and are building a home that has a Rutledge mailing address but truly is closer to Jefferson City than Rutledge. There really isn't too much in Rutledge. I laugh because even though our mailing is there I see no reason to go to this town, besides it's about 15 miles down very winding roads to get there. Whenever I need groceries or anything else we always go to Jefferson City. The views in this area are breathtaking as far as we are concerned and we have never met nicer people.

Thanks, heading west now
Thank you everyone for your posts. We headed out there this weekend and loved it. Next weekend we have decided to head in the opposite direction, 30 to 40 miles West of Knoxville. That would be a much better commute since my office is in West Knoxville. Hoping we can get that same rural feeling and prices.
Thanks again.

I live in Rutledge. It's very peaceful here. I think you would like it.
