HI, all.
This seems to be an amazing resource. Reminds me of using Cruise Critic before a cruise.....always very valuable for us.
We are brand new at this. A couple in our early 60s, retired from our REAL jobs, both working at PT fun jobs. I am a former teacher, he sold a small business. "Latrobe" refers to our home town in PA....home of Arnie Palmer.....and yet we are not even golfers! We are, however, big PENN STATE fans!
We are looking at properties in Kingston, Oak Ridge. We want a view of mountains. Just learned Kingston is charming with lake around courthouse! We want to stay as close to $200,000 as possible. Any suggestions?
Many thanks.

Kingston is great, and there are a couple of places just auctioned outiside of Kingston, in the next town called Midtown, and turn off at Caney creek, and go to Grandvista Bay. Several properties, but not in the 200 range. You will have a difficult time, if you want water front, for that price. Watts Barr, is great, and again no water front in that range, but you could find some water views. good luck.

Hi, Latrobe. I am from C. PA, myself, close to Latrobe! I graduated from LHSU many moons ago and taught in PA for several years before moving on. I think you will be very impressed with the E. TN area because it is so much like central PA. It is lovely in both places - but, different in many ways.

Something that you really should consider is that no one else has the same requirements and wishes for their retirement area. It is very important to visit Oakridge/Kingston area, and others that you might be interested in. Get an idea of the local culture and whether or not you feel that you can embrace it happily.

Check out the medical facilities, parks, local fairs and entertainment, shopping, etc. You get the idea. The place that you choose must fit you as much as possible because you cannot change it, nor should you, once you make your move.

My hubby and I searched the SE for many years, visited often during all seasons and finally zeroed in on the Knoxville area. We love the friendly people, the culture of E. TN., all of the wonderful sights and offerings. We feel that we will comfortably fit in, assimilate our new home and have something to give back to TN neighbors. Oakridge and Kingston are in a very pretty area of E. TN.

Visit several areas, try to see them in different seasons, talk to natives to the area, and enjoy as many venues as you can while here. Read the forums, including Tennessee main forum, to get a flavor of what the area has to offer and the culture of the area.

Ask as many questions as you want, expect positive and some negative feedback, do lots of research on the forum for cost of living, shopping, medical facilities, taxes, etc. so that you are well-informed before your first visit. Enjoy the process and chime in on the forums whenever you wish.

Have a happy move and retirement!
