I agree with JMT... we often get the remnants of a hurricane up here in east Tennessee, but its often just some rain, gusty winds and occasional tornado threat from the storm.
The worst I remember was back in 1989 when Hugo slammed into the South Carolina coastline. The storm roared its way up into east Tennessee and came right over northeast Tennessee. I remember it was so windy... (sustained winds) were still 50-60 mph when it got here and was still classified as a tropical storm.

What weather fears do you have up there?

Now that I live in TN, I will escape this one. No hunkering down for me! (For all non Floridians that's the catch phrase used in FL when you are getting ready to ride out a hurricane) I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with Jeanne, Francis and Wilma. My daughter is still there though and my mom. I am hoping for the best for you guys. It looks as though this will only be a cat 1. That's a good sign. Good Luck ShanRaye.
Tornadoes scare the heck out of me here though. While the damage is not as widespread as a hurricane, it sure is more deadly and intense! Tornadoes are just over over faster, than being pummeled for hours on end by hurricanes.

Hunkering down is just what is happening now even though the latest reports (7 pm) indicate Fay is moving a little more west. Since we are in Central FL, that news is appreciated. We have our water, generator ready, canned food and plywood shutters on alert!! Miami and Key West schools are closed for Monday and Tuesday. Of course, tonight's 11 o'clock news will give us the updated coordinates and on in to Monday. We are hoping for the best as this is to be our last sumemr in FL and on to East TN.

The main complaint I hear about Knoxville weather from newcomers is that winter can sometimes have long, dreary spells of cold rain.

I know how you feel kp. I was over it after being hit with Jeanne, Frances and then Wilma. I had to replace my pool cage 3 times at my own expense. It costs a lot to resceen an entire pool cage. At least the frame held. The whole routine just gets exhausting. Fay seems as if it may just reach cat 1 so hopefully you guys won't have to deal with much damage.

Survivor of Hurricane Andrew, Katrina, Rita, Charlie, Wilma, Floyd, and countless others while living in Miami for many moons...
It's kind of odd watching Fay from a distance. The garage isn't full of gallon water jugs, gas cans, batteries and boxes of pop tarts. No local media created anxiety...
The local media down there like to work everyone up in frenzy (this was not the case for Andrew back in '91 and everything prior though) Justifiable or not, most get a little hurricane-weary while every local tv station suspends regular programming to convince everyone that this COULD BE THE BIG ONE!!!! And you better get ready by watching our broadcast non-stop!
When I called my brother down in Miami he said it was business as usual at the trucking terminal where he works. Hey, people still need stuff to buy--even during a Tropical Storm/Hurricane Watch/Warning. The trucks rarely stop rolling.
As for me... I'm bummed b/c Fay may rain out our planned yard sale this weekend.

The way the track is now 2.5 minutes ago. From just south of Naples>>> North East Exiting around the Space Center >> Oak Hill skirting the coast and heading for the outer banks of Georgia -- South -- North Carolina rain and wind west over too the foot hills of the Smokies if it gets that far....
