Default No Hurricanes in TN!

I know this probably does not belong on this board.....but I just wanna say I so wish I was up there right now. I am so glad I will not be here in Fort Myers, Florida next year! We are projected to have Hurricane Faye visit us! I went through the house today getting supplies together. You would think I would have this routine down and wouldnt' be scared. But I am...........

What weather fears do you have up there?

Yes. I noticed. Hopefully the direction will change. We have lots of family members that are still in Fort Myers and Cape Coral. We were there during Charley. My heart goes out to you.

I'm afraid of tornadoes, but they don't happen very often around here. When we rented a mobile home here, near Anderson County, it was terrifying, though. We have since moved into Knoxville proper and I feel better.

I really like the weather here.

We have had a few hurricanes hit us, but of course by the time they get up this way they're merely strong storms with lots of rain. Several years ago we had a couple hit us within a few weeks of each other, and it caused a section of I-40 to slide down the mountain into the French Broad River just across the state line in NC.

Otherwise, we're fortunate in East Tennessee to not have extreme weather, for the most part. It's generally too mountainous for tornadoes, we're too far from the coast to have hurricanes or tropical depressions, we're too far south for blizzards, and we rarely get extreme heat (temps of over 100). We've had a few storms with strong winds that cause minor flooding and power outages, and up around Crossville on the Cumberland Plateau they've had a few small tornadoes the last couple of years. But that's about it.

It's great here.

Default Amen

Amen to great here, the only thing that took me getting used to was the sound of thunder, I am in the valley at the bottom of a mountain and when thunder booms off that mountain its the loudest thunder I have ever heard, sounds like a big explosion. I love it now though since I've gotton used to it.

I lived in Chicago area and n.w. Indiana, blizzards, ice and tornados. Moved to middle Tn, tornados, some ice then to Fl. Lightening storms, lots of rain of late, hurricanes and tornados and 100 degree heat. I hope to be back in Tn soon to the Knoxville area! Have had a twister and 2 tornados hit the house and I have had enough....

You might get your wish later this week. Tropical Storm Fay is probably going to become a hurricane as it skirts around the west coast of Florida, and it might head up this way bringing a lot of rain to East Tennessee.

That would be great! We sure could use it. Well, not the flooding, destructive type. Just the type that make the flowers and the grass happy.

Granted, I've lived here for just 13 months or so, but I can't think of any weather I would consider even remotely "severe". The weather in this part of TN is absolutely amazing.

The hardest part to get used to for us was the lack of wind for all intents and purposes.

I've been trying to figure out why the trees seem to come down so easily around here when a decent storm does hit, and the only thing I can think of is that they are not stressed very much by wind on a regular basis.

I've heard that this year has been particularly bad because of last year's severe drought. It weakened a lot of trees making them easier to topple in the wind. I guess that makes sense, I don't know, I don't recall ever experiencing such a drought in this area.

It's funny that you said it's not that windy here, because I've felt it's just the opposite! Maybe it's just the configuration of the houses in my neighborhood or something, but on more than one occasion I've had to go chasing my empty garbage cans as the wind has hurled them across the street into neighbors' yards...
