I will be visiting the Knoxville area in September househunting. I need help/advice on specific areas of town. When I visited last year I loved the Fountain City area, but need to explore alot of other neighborhoods to find out where I want to live. I am considering Powell, Halls, Gibbs, Corryton, South-Doyle and South Knoxville. Can anyone tell me about these areas pros/cons. I have been told by former Knoxville residents to stay away from the East Knoxville area, but from researching on this forum I have read that East Knox county is nice and not crime ridden and that the east side of the downtown area is where people suggest to stay away from. I have found many houses in the Carter area on the MLS that I like, but am not sure about the area. Please help me to narrow my search down, since I only have a few days to house hunt. I appreciate any and all assistance.

From the communities mentioned, it sounds as if you like a more rural area. Each neighborhood has its merits. For ease of commute and being the most centrally located to the plethora of West Knoxville shopping, dining, theaters, etc...I'd recommend Powell.

Hardin Valley is the hot neighborhood right now, and there are some great houses going up on the stretch of Lovell Road between I-140 and I-40.

Check out this website. www.viewsandvisits.com.
It is a video library of knoxville and the surrounding areas. This should give you a good idea about the area.
It is not an agent website.

I agree with BST but it depends also on how close to d/t you need to be. Hardin Valley is beeeaaaauuuuuutiful but it's a bit of a drive to d/t. I think Powell is a good recommendation if you want rural. If you want to be close to the city, then you can pick just about anywhere. There are some questionable streets in east knox but there are some fine areas there too. I was born and raised part of my life in Newark, NJ and there are areas I wouldn't venture into so I didn't find Magnolia particularly frightening.

We're in what's considered Ritta. I like the location because traffic isn't the issue it seems to be on 33 and Emory Road over in Halls and Powell...where we were originally looking.

The ONLY reason I would live in W. Knoxville is to be closer to some stores...other than that, the traffic over there drives me crazy.

Another person spreading lies about "east knoxville" I see.

East Knoxville inside the loop, maybe, or around Magnolia, but there are MANY nice areas east of Northshore Drive.

Hey Kimmie, the area of east is usually referring to the old area, in and around Magnolia, and Carter is great. The Carter Ridge area, is great, and Karns is sort of an extension of Knoxville, going west down Oak Ridge hwy, and only 15 minutes away. Powell is also great, only a few minutes off of Emory rd, and lots of new shopping centers, on Clinton Hwy, only a 10 minute drive. As mentioned, Hardin Valley is growing fast, with all sorts of choices. South knox is also growing fast, with several new areas to shop, New Food city, Lowes, and is accesible to west knox by using the John Sevier hwy, to Pellissippi pkw.

I've lived in Karns since 94 when we moved from CA and find it a great location. Close to pretty much everything, but still out a ways. Travel to downtown is 15 minutes, unless you encounter those that drive 40mph all the time (even though it's 55 zone). About equal time to Oak Ridge or Turkey Creek.

Contact Bob, I know he would take good care of you. (Unsolicited endorsement).
