I'm sure you'll be fine. It is a beautiful area. My mother always says, "water seeks it's own level"... I'm sure you'll find progressive thinkers. People are people everywhere... so many kinds... good luck to you.

In regards to Knoxville, have you looked where you want to live? There's a lot of trendy areas in the Old City where you can get a loft but they are expensive. Also, homeless tend to hang out around there.
East Knoxville is the "old" Knoxville and it's filled with lots of old buildings and neighborhoods, it's pretty nice. There is the Magnolia ghetto but that's about it, I wouldn't live around there you often hear of people getting shot and stabbed. (It's an all Black area though, not very diverse).
West Knoxville is good if you have a family. It's very suburban with low crime. There is a nice mall and just about everything you need. I like East Knoxville better though because it has more character + UT.

went to some areas with a realtor one day but haven't seen too much of knoxville. we liked the 4th and gill neighborhood the best so far. large, older houses which are charming and have lots of character. lofts seem fun, but you're right, a little expensive, and i think we would like to have a yard. coming from nyc that is a dream for us!
what neighborhoods do you like in east knoxville? we'll have to check it out. thanks for the tips.

Hi. Yes, 4th and Gill is a nice area; however, I think West Knoxville is nicer because it's a lot newer (and safer).
4th and Gill is off Broadway (where I lived) which has a lot of stuff around it. Supermarket, UT, etc. At the beginning of Broadway where it intercepts with Western has a lot of homeless/halfway houses. Also, Magnolia is right there too.
However, once you go down Broadway it's nice. A lot of the neighborhoods in there are beautiful and old. It's mostly a blue collar area (as opposed to say West Knoxville). As for neighborhoods in the area, you'll have to look around. They are all off Broadway, so what you pick is up to you. The highschool is literally a block away.
Not sure if you've looked in the streets surrounding UT (off the strip) but don't move in that area, it's all college kids and it gets pretty crazy somenights. (I went to UT).

Furthermore, I don't understand what you mean "Also if there any particular reason that there are not many minorities who live there?" The "diverse" areas in Knoxville are the ones you do not want to drive in after dark.
Knoxville's actually city area is "diverse" (if you mean anything non-White) because the majority of the people either commute to the Old City or they have moved out to West Knoxville's suburbs (ie: White flight).
If you want an area which is non-White, I recommend Magnolia Ave. However, it's pretty dangerous and often very crimefilled. It has a zoo though.

61.4% black in Memphis. 10% in a city this large is a lot of people to be off. Or maybe there is another agena?

It seems that you have made your decision, but just a word of warning
I live in NYC too, but spent 17 years in the South. Tennessee and North Carolina.
Learn to listen a little more carefully in the South. The culture there says to be nice. Therefore, I found that people often said one thing to your face and something else behind your back. Just know that it is hard to take Southerners at face value. Something to do with an old world chivalry or something.
One reason that Knoxville isn't as racially diverse as some other Southern Cities is true of most of the Appalachian mountain range. Historically they didn't have many slaves in the Mountains. Therefore, after reconstruction there were less who felt like that was home. That I think is more a matter of geography than anything.

I'm not sure if this is a joke or not but MLK Ave was constantly on the news for shootings/stabbings/etc. It intersects with Harriet Tubman ave. While the Zoo (off Magnolia) is nice, you need to be careful if you plan on driving in the aforementioned areas.

You're absolutely right. I'm from up North and I had a tough time with this when I moved down South. It's a lot different.
