Yes, they have said that the shooter was a student.

OH. MY. GOSH. I am just stunned. I am so sorry. That poor family. I am outraged but also immensely sad. There's just no way that this can ever have a happy ending for anyone. All of us who know people at Central HS need to quit what we're doing, say a prayer for them, and give them a big hug.

Ohh. I'm so sorry.
I'm very sad - such a sad day. The families and the friends and, well, everyone. And the kid that did it needs a lot of mental and emotional help, obviously - and his parents and family will too. How horrible for everyone.

Just watched the live feed. For those who did not or can not see it:
Two students involved who knew each other, one the shooter, one the victim. It happened in the cafeteria at 8:11, police arrived by 8:13, shooter ran off school grounds, was caught by 8:17, 6 minutes after 911 call. (way to go Knox police!) School was put on immediate lock down. As were several other surounding schools.
The victim was brought to UT ER, parents were brought to him. He did not survive.
Suspect is in custody and they are interviewing him. Police at school are interviewing other students and faculty. Students are being sent home.
The police did say that this was not a random incident, it seems that the shooter had the intent to shoot the victim. 1 shot fired, no one else involved. (well, as far as the shooting goes, in every other way, all students at this school were involved, poor things must be scared out of their wits. )

Looks like the shooter is guilty of 1st degree murder. No need to waste taxpayer dollars in a cut and dried case.

What a loser.

Forgive my ignorance - I don't mean to sound sarcastic - I'm trying to grasp what you are trying to convey and I don't think I'm getting it. What do you mean by wasting taxpayer dollars? Do you mean the investigation and interviews or the lock down/closing of the other schools or the counseling that will probably be provided to students? Yeah, the case is probably cut and dried, but the parents will want KPD to do due diligence and make absolutely sure that the kid doesn't have friends who are targeting other kids, etc, that there were no drugs involved, no coercion, etc. The closing of the schools - well, nobody is going to be able to concentrate today anyway, so it's a lost day. Tomorrow is Friday - might as well let students stay out the weekend and have faculty spend tomorrow coordinating counseling sessions for students who saw their friend being murdered - that is really traumatic to the kids.
I might have read your response wrong though - I'm not sure what you meant. The shooter - yeah - he needs help. He's a kid with serious problems. I wonder if people have been calling him a loser all his life or only now. Blows my mind how life can change so drastically in such a small amount of time. I imagine what breakfast was like for the victim's family - were they happy or were they rushed or annoyed? Blah - I need to stop thinking about this and get back to work.

Just caught the latest update. The shooter is at the police station and no longer answering questions, has invoked his right to have a lawyer present. The same public defender who is at court right now defending the shooter at the church has spoke to him but had to go to the court house. Will come back in an hour. He stated on his way out of the police station that the shooter is a minor and has no one with him, no family member or friend have shown up at the police station.
Parents have picked up their kids at a church down the street from the school. The kids are all freaked out over it.
One kid on camera said: It is all just crazy, we all thought Central was really turning around and now this, is is just sad and scary.

I worked in one of the knox county high schools as a school police officer for the 1995-96 school year before moving back to california-there was a number of things going on that the public never knew that could have been a big problem

I'm talking about all the court cases, appeals, etc...that you and I will get to pay for.

I do have sympathy for the kid because he's obviously messed up in the head, but this is no way to solve problems, and any human being worth my time (or money) already knows that.

Sorry if that's harsh, but that's the way it is.

ANYONE, regardless of their upbringing, knows that the way to solve a problem is not by killing someone, something, or themself.

I've personally had enough of these idiots solving their problems in the most juvenile and cowardly ways possible.

I'll now get off my soapbox.
