Chattanoga VS Memphis VS Knoxville (Chattanooga, Midtown: rent, mover, homes)

Well I'm glad you like the city of Memphis. I don't. Yes, there are lovely condos in Memphis and some beautiful homes, but looks do not mean everything. The old saying 'Don't just a book by its cover' is so true. We are at almost 100 murders in the city and it's just past half way though the year. That's a lot! The crime isn't the only thing I can think of that makes me hate Memphis. It however is in the top 5. I don't live far from the city of of Memphis and I don't just go by what I hear or read, but I go by what I see and have seen. Leadership in the city of Memphis is a joke. Things to do? Ok, the zoo, it's ok. Gardens, ok, casinos, no way, uhm, there's really not a lot to do. I'm sorry, there just isn't. A few ball games, Beale Street, Elvis's place, what really is there to do in Memphis? You've only tend to mention neighborhoods. Whoopie! Uhm, as far as the building of the condos, It is going to be as funny when they tumble due to the earthquake line we are in. Yea, *sarcastically* Go Memphis.

By the way, Way to go King Willie (W.W. Herrington) you've done good for DeSoto County, Mississippi.

You "hate" Memphis? You want Downtown to be destroyed by an earthquake? Don't you think that is a little strong? If you dislike the area in which you live, why don't you do every one a favor and get the heck out of Dodge. By the way, what the heck is so special about DeSoto County? Cookie cutter suburban sprawl? Big box retailers and chain restaurants as far as the eye can see? Clogged bumper to bumper traffic on Goodman Road? Yippie!

As far as not finding anything to do in the city, that is probably correct if your idea of a good time is shopping at Wal-Mart followed by eating at the Olive Garden.

And yes, I do mention neighborhoods. Hey genius, neighborhoods are where people live in a city. Believe it or not, it is a pretty important aspect of urban living. You have probably lived in "subdivisions" so long you wouldn't know what an actual neighborhood looked like.

I never said I wanted the city destoryed, you oviousally misunderstood. I just know that Memphis can not even pass their own fire inspection for an overpriced golf course while the schools struggle for funds, and so I know these expensive condos are not being built to withstand the force of an earthquake. Most of the city isn't prepared for it.

Nothing special here in DeSoto county either. We experience the same problems as Memphis:

1. Heat
2. Humidity
3. Crime
4. Lack of driving skills
5. Traffic
6. Rudeness

I'm sorry but just shopping and eating isn't all that fun either. Olive Garden isn't real Italian food anyways.

This is a forum, and someone wanted to ask about they city of Memphis and I told them what I know. I live within minutes so I know. And I've not lived in subdivisions all my life. Heck, http://www.dictionary.com subdivsion is a section of land divided into lots, and that is what a neighborhood is too, each house is division of the land. I've lived in houses, apartments, city, and county.

As soon as I get my foot into the ground with the ministry I am involved with, I will be moving. Trust me on that one!

Easy...stay away from Memphis.........and anywhere with a Mississippi address, including 'Olive Branch' (even thoug it's nicer than Memphis for sure), but who the heck (transfer) want an address in the pooerest state in the United States ??

I spent too long in Memphis...lived in Germantown, etc....Germantown is strange too....people buy 400k houses and can't afford to buy decent furniture or window coverings.....heck, one of my neighbors 'qualified' to buy this huge 550k house, and the idiot was out there slaving and cutting his own grass !....duh...I don't even own a friggen lawnmower...I figured that if you can't afford to have a professional service do it for 100 a month, you probably can't afford the house.....unless you're foolish enough to subscribe to the notion that " I like yardwork"....(sure, yeah...In Memphis TN in May, June July August and September....you bet)....strange

I live in MS, and was thinking of moving to the South haven MS area.. it's only about 15 miles or so from Memphis, and I've heard lots of good things about it.. it's a nice town, and would cost about half of what it would cost to live in German Town.. maybe check it out

Now there are worse places than Memphis but the funniest thing is the original poster comparing Memphis to Knoxville or Chattanooga. Why in the world would ANYONE choose Memphis over those two beautiful towns with the mountains nearby.

If you do choose Memphis there are good aspects - Good barbecue, Good nightlife if you enjoy the touristy blues scene, casinos nearby, mild winters, low cost of living, traffic isn't too bad, etc. But Memphis has ALOT of bad. Some compared it to pre-Katrina New Orleans and that's a fair comparison. Out of control crime (Memphis always seems to rate either 1st or 2nd in murders per capita), racial problems, blatantly corrupt politicians, lack of infrastructure (pot holes in the streets, trash everywhere, rat problems), and the fact that every other vehicle is a tractor trailer.

The mayor here is something else. Moderator cut: personal attack A government indictment just waiting to happen. If you do move to Memphis DO NOT live in Shelby county unless it is is Collierville, Germantown, or Desoto County.

Okay, I know I'm late on this thread but I believe I can definetly shed some light on the reality of Memphis living.

My wife and I are from NYC and have lived here for 7 months. We have a 3 year old son and decided to try something completely different as I have friends who had recently left the city and bought nice big houses in Dallas and Atlanta. As you know housing in NYC is insane and you get no living space.

My wife had an oppurtunity with her company to come here and manage 38 retail counters and I do web design/development from home. We decided on Bartlett to avoid Memphis taxes and we heard it was a safe area. We got a great deal on a really nice home BUT... we absolutely hate it here.

There is NO CULTURE at all. The drivers are the worst on the planet, and I come from NY and have lived in Jersey City as well where I thought the worst drivers were. We thought that people here would be nicer and in fact they are not at all. Food blows and we know people in East Memphis and Germantown (the "nice" areas) that have had frequent break-ins.

The crime here is rediculous. I was so looking forward to a better quality of life but if you are considering Memphis, think again.

Oh yeah, the city's government is corrupt as hell. We have to stay at least a year and then we are out of here. I have spoken to natives who said the crime is spreading like a disease and you have to keep moving farther out.

There is a reason it's so cheap...

Interesting insight dev212, was this your first relocation? I wonder if this could be more related to some homesickness, movers regret, missing family and freinds, etc.
I've been visiting the Atlanta forum lately and I came to an epiphany - 90% of the posts about Atlanta are negative as well! And most everyone that moved there has regretted it. Of course the 99% of people that like Atlanta (or Memphis) don't have a reason to post. So boys and girls take that under consideration when you read these forums. I'm sure if there was a heaven forum there would be 99% complaints.

That being said I'm not suprised you said Memphis has no culture or food amenities compared to NYC, but by U.S. standards Memphis actually has a rich history and heritage. And I actually find traffic here compared to most metropolitan areas mild, particularly compared to NYC. But Memphis worse than Jersey City? Wow that's low.
