Exclamation Moving to Oak Ridge, TN this weekend! What do I need to know?!

Yay I'm so excited we're moving this weekend! If all goes well, we're headed down Friday to move in to our new place! We found a great townhouse near the country club (supposedly - not like I can see it from where we're gonna be, lol) but its nice and roomy, clean and no bugs

One question I do have is where the bloody hell is the gas utility place? I had 3 people tell me 3 similar (yet none exactly the same) locations - we tried to find it when we were down there last week but drove around in circles for over a half hour and gave up. Heck I'm not even sure of the name of the place! lol So now I have to try to get that transferred before moving in Friday - which really sucks as we can't leave here til probably 1pm (central time too) because the landlord doesn't want to come til their lunch hour - now I'm worried we can't get there before they close as its a 4 hr drive Anyone know if you can have that turned on/transferred by phone or online?

So any info about things I should know regarding living in Oak Ridge??? Are there any "do's/don't's" I should be aware of?

I'll be doing an internship (and if I'm lucky possibly working there afterwards) at a company that contracts a lot with ORNL, so I'm all into the science thing. But I'm also interested greatly in the arts, as I do make and sell some stuff (I can't tell you how thrilled I am being within a reasonable driving distance of craft stores! lol), as well as music (classical, broadway, folk, celtic type stuff). Any info on this aspect would be great too!

Thanks a bunch

I was going to say, "I don't have gas" so I can't help you there but I can hear the jokes now. You might check here (there's a phone number):

http://www.orud.org/

If that's not the right place, do you know where you go to have your electric turned on/pay your bill in person? You might ask there if no one here responds. That city municipal building is located on Tulane, same road as the Science museum, same side of the street but closer to the turnpike. If you turn onto Tulane from the turnpike, it's on your right. There are police cars in the lot as they are located there, too.

Things you should know:

1. Mapquest is your friend, especially the turn by turn driving directions and map. When I first moved here I used it a lot because 900 Oak Ridge Turnpike, for example, doesn't tell me where on the Turnpike the place is. With Mapquest driving directions you'll see the cross street on the map with the directions.

2. There's a chunk of the turnpike that is under construction. They're widening it. UGH!

3. You want to buy the Oak Ridger Thursday newspaper, if you don't subscribe. The Thursday edition of that newspaper has a section called Intermission that tells you about upcoming events in Oak Ridge, Knoxville and Anderson County.

The Oak Ridger comes out Monday - Friday. The Oak Ridge Observer comes out only on Thursdays and is a weekly. Both papers do a good job of covering local stuff and ORNL and science.

4. Peak Fall foliage is supposed to be the last week of October so you are arriving at the right time. I recommend Norris (two towns away in the State Park/Dam/Lenoir Museum area - if you need directions, just ask), Fall Creek Falls State Park (a bit of a drive going west), Cades Cove in the Smokies (crowded) and the Foothills Parkway to see the leaves.

5. Your two largest supermarkets in OR are Food City and Krogers. Both have pharmacies. The bagel place and Blockbuster Video are in the same shopping center (Manhattan Place) as Food City. K-Mart is in the same shopping center as Kroger's. Food City is on the Turnpike and Kroger's is on Illinois.

6. Tennessee Fall Homecoming is a big multi-day event at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris (October 9 - 12). It's cheaper if you buy your tickets in advance. For info (scoll down):

Tennessee Fall Homecoming.htm

7. You might also be interested in Pellissippi State's Hot Air Balloon Festival on September 26 - 27:

Pellissippi State Hot Air Balloon Festival 2008

8. There is the Clinch River Antiques Festival in Clinton if that's your thing on October 10 and 11.

9. There is a Secret City Head Race (rowing competition) at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge on Saturday, October 4:

Oak Ridge Rowing Association | Calendar

10. Also on October 4, Pet Fest at the Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge.

11. Also on October 4, the symphony performs in the Oak Ridge High School auditorium for their first concert of the season.

12. Also on October 4 is a Garrison Weekend (living history) at Ft Loudoun:

Fort Loudoun

13. There's an Owl Prowl at the Oak Ridge Arboretum on October 25.

14. There's a Halloween Party for kids 4th grade and under at the Oak Ridge Civic Center on October 23.

15. The Post Office is on Administration Rd. If you are heading towards Clinton on the Turnpike, make a right on Administration Rd (there's a McDonalds on the corner) and it's on your right.

When you get here, you'll have to take care of your vehicles and driver's licenses and you can register to vote. The county clerk's office is at 728 Emory Valley Road. Very easy to get to. Easy to get in and out quickly. As you are heading toward the lake on Emory Valley Rd, it's on the left hand side of the street right after the Bristol Park apartment complex and the Estates of Oak Ridge, entrance is on the left side of the building.

16. The library has computers if you don't have Internet right away. If you get a library card you can use the Internet there for 2 hours per day. The library/civic center is across from the high school. Behind the library is Bissell Park. You will notice the bandshell there. Many Oak Ridge outdoor events take place in Bissell Park.

17. Lock everything. Don't leave anything laying around outside of your home. When you lock your car, leave nothing in view you wouldn't want to have stolen. Don't know if you are male or female but do not leave your purse unattended in the shopping cart.

18. The sirens are tested the first Wednesday of every month around noon. If they go off schedule, it will be published in the Oak Ridger. Pick up the brochure "What To Do If An Emergency Occurs at the Oak Ridge Reservation" at the Visitor's Center.

19. I recommend the Riverview Grill in Clinton for barbecue, I'm just sayin'. They have take out, too.

20. The movie theater (Tinseltown) schedule will be in that Intermission section of Thursday's Oak Ridger. You can also view it online on the Fandango website:

Thumbs up Have a safe move

Big Ed's Pizza! That's about the only thing I miss after moving from east TN. I have not found pizza nearly as good around here (Charleston, SC area).

Thank you for the website link - I can do my gas application online which will help. (Course I have to wonder when they say they may want up to $500 for a deposit?!?! I sure hope not!)

Thanks for the great info! I hadn't even thought about foliage season so that will be something to look forward too. And my mum will be happy to know about the balloon festival, she was kinda sad about missing the upcoming one here

I'm so excited about moving there, I think I'll really like it and can't wait! (now getting there, not so much - hopefully we'll have not problems with the moving truck on all the hills and curves, lol)
