JMT, I think the rich college students aren't rich. It's their parents

Most of the Macy's in the Southeast were former Hecht's and Rich's stores that were converted after a series of mergers. If there had been a Rich's or Hecht's in Knoxville, then there likely would now be a Macy's there. There is a Macy's in Chatanooga, Atlanta, Greenville, SC, and Lexington, KY. But maybe they will eventually find a way there.

The Macy's in Birmingham began to remind me of Belks.

That was not intended as a compliment.

Actually, Rich's was in Knoxville, opening a store in 1955 and later selling out to Millers, which was acquired by another company. Their building is now a UT Conference Center.

Under the leadership of Richard Rich, affectionately known as Dick Rich, Rich's began expansion in the 1950s. Rich's had moved outside the Atlanta area for its first new store in 1955 when a store in Knoxville Tennessee was opened.

I don't believe there is a Macy's in Chattanooga.

The Belk stores here in SC are very nice, as well as Charlotte, NC. And in Atlanta, the Belk at Phipps Plaza is a former Parisian store.

"Very nice" is a subjective term.

Some interesting info in here.

Josh Flory: Buy Buy Baby eyes Knoxville store » Knoxville News Sentinel

Especially interesting regarding the Backyard Burgers property in Bearden and Capiello. Also info regarding the former Borders properties. Buy buy Baby is going into the West Knoxville location and Ulta Beauty in the Turkey Creek property. I'm intersted in Ulta. I've never heard of it before.
