I am a new retiree and have been considering Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee for a new place to live . Knoxville, in particular seemed like a great place for me to settle. I even sent for many samples of Knoxville life. But, then I read this article :

"Fifty-six years old, household income $250,000 and two million in assets. Those are the people we want to come to Tennessee," says Winchester, who does not even promote the second-home market "because they leave their bank account where their first home is."

Is this the kind of person who is moving to Tennessee ? Would I be unwelcome without two million (or even close ) in assets? Ths certainly is not me in more ways than one. What a total snob. Reminds me of that pompous guy from MASH whose name was also Winchester , now that I think of it.

Nancy,

May I ask where you found that article in question?

Thanks.

Good Grief! Who is putting out that nonsense! That may be what "they" want but it sure isn't who lives or moves here.
Nancy, you're just going to have to come for a visit. I'll have the guest room ready by mid-October. Scraping wallpaper at the moment.

We really need a link. This is the second weird remark, today.

By the way, that is so far off the mark it is ridiculous. This is the most down to earth place I have ever been. Living in Knoxville is like wearing all the comfortable clothes you've ever owned, all at once.

I'm 46 and I was finally able to buy my first home, for crying out loud. I would have never been able to do that before.

What a bunch of baloney.

It would mean I shouldn't be here either. Total nonsense. The article was in the Florida newspaper, Herald Tribune. here is the link I found by goggling the quote. It is about 1/2 of the way down.

Will Florida attract the boomers? | HeraldTribune.com | Southwest Florida's Information Leader

Nancy I've been here long enough to know you'll do just fine.

Nancy,

Would love to have you here in the Knoxville area but would also recommend your checking out Kingsport. My dad is a retiree there and absolutely loves it. There is so much to do and the natural beauty is unbelievable in that part of the state.

All the best.

Thanks for the link. It doesn't even mention Knoxville. The quote is from a state guy that wants to attract rich retirees to Tennessee.

Thank you, smoky mountain. And, you knoxgarden are one of the reasons that I thought about this gorgeous state.

Can you believe the snobbery of someone actually saying something like that (and not being embarrassed, apparently ).

As I mentioned to someone else: Do your research, come and visit and draw your own conclusions. If possible, try to stay for an extended period of time while assessing the area.

You are right! Knoxgarden is a wonderful reason to move here. She is an endless font of knowledge, and when you are really down she tells great, funny stories.

Now that SMG. I don't know about her!

You ought to check us out. We have a great forum, too!
