Some Knoxville questions - We're coming for a visit!
Our October plans keep changing (see the note under my name?) and my wife wants to spend part (all?) of a day looking over Knoxville. Museums, Civic Center, malls, eateries, etc.
I'm going to scope out the Knoxville web site for these places and assume that any worth seeing will be there. But are there places that we should visit that might not be on that site?
She also asked me to ask you if there are areas we should avoid. It's not something I worry about, but she does and I want her to be comfortable during the look-see.
So, are there "bad" areas we should stay out of? I assume Knoxville is like any city and it does.
I appreciate the help. We're getting close, this week is clean the car, get all the stuff together and mow. Then, Roadtrip!
Edit: Is Knoxville in a wet county?

Sorry, didn't see your post until this afternoon.
PLaces to avoid...........I guess it depends on what you are trying to avoid, or what you are looking for.
Seriously, just about all of Knoxville is pretty safe. Some parts east of downtown may be areas you might want to avoid - at night. You can probably do a search and look at threads that have covered this in the past.
Downtown at night is great, but I wouldn't wander too far north or east late.
Crime can be found anywhere, in any city. Knoxville is a pretty safe city overall.
Come, enjoy our fair city, and have a good time. October is a great time, since the fall colors will be starting (are starting), and there will be lots of stuff going on.

Thank you. I agree that crime can be found anywhere. I appreciate the caution you gave.

What surprised me is the number of hits with no help. My state/city forum has this question posed quite often and there are always numerous responses letting them know where they should and shouldn't go.
I can't imaging Knoxville doesn't have some of the same neighborhoods we do considering it's a larger city.
I dunno, I guess I expected some of that southern hospitality you all keep braggin' on. What, I insulted you you by asking about this?
Before you decide I'm paranoid I will tell you that probably 90% of you would find the nearest street and turn around if you drove into the area where i grew up. Besides the question isn't for me, it's for my wife. Her comfort level is pretty low, and for good reason.
Then I get the wonderfully helpful smartass Wow comment. Real class, there.

Well, I didnt see this post as I havent been on much but since I did I can answer somewhat.
I know my first drive into Knoxville we went a little North of downtown as we were just driving, next thing I knew we were at a dead end at some railroad tracks and in a horrible looking area, I was petrified since I had no idea where we were. Needless to say I told DH to turn around and get outta Dodge. So I understand your hesitency.
I have found Knoxville itself to be pretty safe, like people say there is crime everywhere. I do believe you would like Market Square downtown, its a beautiful area and a nice place to walk around. You have the Womens Basketball Hall of Fame downtown also and of course the Stadium and the Ut campus and Worlds Fair Park.
I would not suggest to any tourist to go walking around at night especially in an unknown area, thats usually not wise no matter where you are.
Most of TN is Dry by the way. enjoy your trip

Thank you. What you say coincides with Barking Spider (love that screen name), so I guess we will avoid north after dark.
I thought most of TN was dry. I did find a restaurant named Calhouns that is highly rated and carries some interesting beers, so we will go there for dinner one night.

I saw this but didn't answer it because this question has been asked and discussed ad nauseum in this forum. Tek_Freek, you seem like a smart guy, so I just figured you would search the Knoxville forum for similar threads (of which there are plenty).
Personally, I don't know of any areas of Knoxville to avoid particularly since you didn't really say WHY they should be avoided. Knoxville has a few housing projects and has a couple of neighborhoods I wouldn't venture in at night, otherwise it's a remarkably safe city for its size. We've had a few well publicized homicides the last couple of months but they're well publicized because they're so rare.
But, to be brutally honest, I wonder if you really want to live around us. In an earlier post you accused us of having ulterior motives and being dishonest when we tried to talk you out of moving to Fairfield Glade. Now you question our hospitality just because we didn't answer your question immediately with the answers you wanted to hear (side note: what about your Midwestern spirit of individualism that should inspire you to find the answers on your own?).
Regardless, have a good trip!
