Relocating question....
Hi everyone....husband and myself are seriously considering relocating to TN...he'll possibly be taking a job at DOE, OakRidge ( know all about it not worried)... Im interested in perhaps lving approx. 30-45 min. commute away from OakRidge. Im thinking might get more for money that way. Im interested in decent house or double wide, modular, with some land so I can have horses and my dogs there. Figuring approx $300,000 range or less(less is good) trying to make this our retirement place for the future. So question is whats a good area? Rural is what I like, not really looking for a neighborhood. But then again being not so far that its a hard commute to major roads either, for work. Also being its going to be where we will live when we retire and get old, maybe not toooo far from a hospital would be nice aswell. I appreciate any responces you all can give me....thank you.
Hey also...what areas should I be cautious of? Thanks!

As far as affordability or more for the money goes, Oak Ridge is pretty gosh, darn cheap, anyway. But the area you describe is all around.
One area that I just moved from, that is not too far from Oak Ridge, is Heiskell. Lots of rural there, not really any neighborhoods. Lots of horses, cows, etc.

We live in Roane County (south of the river) and one of us has an easy commute to ORNL (taking the west entrance, it's about 35-40 minutes). It's a pretty area with a lot of farms, and if you are willing to be away from the water, land can be reasonable.
We looked at areas north of Knoxville, like Heiskell, but it is a long and not very convenient commute to the lab (although this area is more convenient to Knoxville proper0. You might find something near Clinton with land and a good commute (Anderson County).
I do know of folks who live in Cumberland County who drive in to the lab, but that is a longer commute (about an hour)--but you do get a lot for your money there.

It depends on where you live in Heiskell, of course, but I lived almost near I-75, and it was about 40 minutes to the lab, and that's on a bad day.
But, again, there are so many areas that will fit your needs that it boggles the mind.
Knoxville and Oak Ridge are really in the middle of rural areas, when it comes down to it.
You are just not going to go wrong.

Hey kah1963, like Hiknapster has stated, several areas, will work, as the Oak Ridge area, is surrounded by basiscally 4 counties. The next small town, north is Oliver Springs, and then several towns, going north, up hwy 62, which are Mt. Carmel, Wartburg, Oakdale, and then Sunbright. Except for Sunbright, all these will put you within about at 30 to 45 minute drive, and gives you possibly the land, and what you are looking for and thats in Morgan county. Going west, is the Roane county area, and then north east is Claxton, Hieskell, and Powell. Good luck, and keep us posted.

We have someone on the forum that is from Maryland and now lives in Oak Ridge. She loves it, I think, although she doesn't like the heat in summer. Her name is LauraC.

I moved to Oak Ridge from south west part of Florida. I love my house and it's location but there is a major problem with getting good service in most of the restaurants and stores. I've never walked out of a restaurant until I moved here (I thought 15 minutes was enough time to greet us and ask what we wanted to drink ). The store help is not much better.
Both my husband and I work in customer service fields and we know what is acceptable and what is not. That's why we do most of our business in Knoxville ~ I hate to drive out of "my town" but I like to be greeted with a smile and treated like my business matters .
