Our mountains aren't called "Smoky" just because it sounds good. The sky here has been hazy for centuries. And now with all that ridiculous traffic between Sevierville and Gatlinburg the air can be pretty smoggy. Some days are better than others, and generally it's not as hazy in the less touristy, less populated areas of East Tennessee.

You are right, we do have emission checks in Nashville. Its not too bad if you hit at the right time of the month. I own a 93 Saturn and its emissions are less now, than they were when I first bought it, which leads me to wonder how accurate the emission tests are.

Smog is mainly during the warmer months. In the fall and spring, it may be foggy in the morning. In the winter, it will be foggy and misty if it has been raining. Keep in mind that Knoxville is in a valley. Air stagnation is often problematic in valleys (see California). But don't worry, there are still many clear, sunny days, especially this time of year.
