That's a heck of a commute! But as commutes go, it's a beautiful one. I took this pic on Hwy 63 between La Follette and Harrogate:
And here are some pics I took of LMU:

Harrogat, is about an hours drive from Knoxville, straight up hwy 33, and in the Tazwewll or New Tazewell, there are some nice subd, priced in the 200 and up, and several rural nice properties. Clairborne is a great county, and the England family , owns most of the factorires there, England Manufactoring, all furniture, and Claytons, Moblile Homes is there.

Wow, this is tough. After doing some research last night, I figure Middlesboro would be my best shot. At least they have a Wal-Mart, Sonic, and a Catholic Church.
One thing that has me worried is the serious lack of racial diversity. I read that the people are really nice in that area, but are they only nice to Anglos?? I'm Latina, my husband is Anglo, and we have a 3-month-old. Am I going to have to ignore race-based stares/comments?
Anyhow, at this point I'll wait to see whether I'm invited for an on-campus interview...might as well visit the area before I throw in the towel. I'm also waiting the final decision from a school in Colorado and hopefully I'll be invited for an on-campus interview in Indiana, so we'll see. Thanks for all the advice.

LMU is in a beautiful part of the country. There are a couple of newer subdivisions in Tazewell that definitely are not fixer-uppers...it's a 15 minute drive to Harrogate at the most. Most of the jobs in Tazewell are either furniture factories, DeRoyal (medical supplies), or trucking/distribution. You might find better luck in Middlesboro, Kentucky...but I'm not as familiar with that side of the Cumberland Gap. Good luck.

Middlesboro has some wonderful homes and neighborhoods. I've done some work down there before and have some relatives in the area. Also, further up the road is Pineville KY, again nice old homes.
As to racial comments, well you may get that everywhere. However, I have noticed in the area over the last ten years a steady influx of latinas. I would hope it would not be a problem.

I actually go to school at LMU-DCOM, and live in Knoxville. Make the commute every day.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess that SMG's friend's hubbie's name is Trent. Wow...that was a mouthful.
Anyway, the vast majority of the faculty members I know live in the Harrogate area, or in Tazewell/New Tazewell. There are, however, more than a few that commute. One commutes from Norris, and at least one lives in Halls (here in Knoxville).
There are actually 4 of us students that ride together every day from Knoxville. The drive up 33 is beautiful in the morning. It's not ideal, but I like living in Knoxville, and I should be doing my "schooling" here in Knoxville starting next June.
The prof I know that lives in Halls lives just off Emory Road between 33 and I-75.
If I was going to be working up there every day, I think I'd choose to live right there, but I'm kind of partial to what that area has to offer (small town living and the National Park) and a short commute.
As an added note...the new medical school has the whole area around Harrogate changing on literally a daily basis...and Pete DeBusk is going out of his way to make LMU a force when it comes to higher education.
Let me know if you have any questions, and I'd be happy to try to help.

I am one of three finalists that had a phone interview with the selection committee. I hope to find out by early next week if I'm being invited to visit. Thanks for all the advice.

I got the job. We loved the area when we visited. My husband and father-in-law are packing up the wagons next week!
