Default Summer to winter in 10 days...

...only in East TN. Friendly reminder to cover and/or bring in your tender plants tonight. Weather channel says 34 tonight in Knoxville. Good news is that next two weeks look to warm up again with 70 by the weekend

Am I the only person that hates the two-season weather here? When I was growing up, we had lovely springs and falls. Now we zoom to 80 in April, stay in the 80s and 90s until October, then dip right down to freezing.

This is an unusually early freeze. I brought the night blooming jasmine in last night and, as usual, it's in full bloom at this time of year. It's a lovely perfume outside but a bit overpowering inside. I can usually leave it outside until November when the blooms are gone.
I put it in a bigger pot and it grew a lot. So I've got what's practically a tree in the dining room. I'm thinking about decorating it for Christmas.

I just mentioned our 2 long seasons (summer and winter) to someone the other day. I do wish spring and fall were longer. I detest cold weather and even more so hate the time change that is coming next weekend. Get up and go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. I'll be in full fledged Seasonal Affective Disorder by this time next week!

(thank goodness that Mercury goes out of Retrograde this Friday)

SMG, we can be SAD together!

My mother was commenting on the weather the other day, too-- how it used to be lovely here, with nice long springs and leisurely falls. Winter didn't really kick in until around the holidays. She was lamenting how "beastly" it had become the past few years and how they really might start wintering elsewhere. Of course, then they'd be gone half the year.

SMG, I hope your son is feeling better. Those young bones mend quickly, so hopefully, he'll be home soon.

We may still be ok if it only hits 34 for a short period. Outside of Knoxville (esp. north) is probably gonna be toast. You're right Knoxgarden, average has been about Nov. 10-14 in recent years. It looks like if you bring it in tonight, you can bring it back out for another 2 weeks (at least, according to the the long term forecast). I'm gonna throw some sheets over my peppers and elephant ears and see if I can't get another 2-3 weeks out of them.

That sounds pretty. I've been unable to grow jasmine here, so you must have a green thumb. Or maybe it's just my brown thumb. I can kill anything... except weeds. But, then, my gardener doesn't seem to be able to kill those, either.

Wonder how my knockouts will do? I can't really do anything about them, and they're blooming like crazy. I guess this will kill off my climbers, too, and they're not even producing hips yet. I wasn't going to prune them back for another week or two.

GBH, there is a hardy jasmine known as Confederate jasmine that I (and many others) successfully grow outside! If you're in the metro area, you should be fine (I'm near the lake in SW Knox Co.). Hardy 5-10 degrees.

I know no one wants to hear this, but I LOVE the weather here.

If it's any consolation, in Mass. there are NO springs. It goes from really cold to really hot. The last May that I lived there I wore a winter coat to church, one week, and the following week I was in short-sleeves.
