Question From Alaska to Knoxville

My family and I are moving to Knoxville in June of 07. We currently live in Alaska. My husband and son were born here and have never lived anywhere else. My family is from North Carolina, so living in Tennessee will not be such a culture shock for me.

I have been reading the posts and find everyone here very friendly and helpful. I have been researching the Knoxville area, and have narrowed my place to live down to North, South or Fountain City. I was just hoping that someone might tell me the differences between the three.

Also, my sister will be moving to Maryville in March. She currently lives in Washington State. So I would like to be close to her. If you would be nice enough to give me the distance in driving time between these three places and Maryville I would appreciate the information.

South Knox would definitely be closest to Maryville. They are practically right next door to each other.

I assume by North you are referring to the Halls area. If so, that area is currently in a rapid expansion stage with lots of middle income houses being built. And I mean LOTS. Emory Road is in the process of being widened to handle all of the new traffic. It is a formerly rural area that is rapidly suburbanizing. There is shopping out this way, and everything that is missing from here is right there in Fountain City, just a few miles south.

Fountain City: Older area, a trolleyburb of Knoxville with a very quaint little heart-shaped duck pond at its center. Lots to do around there, a good community feel. Restaurants and shopping close. Most of the housing stock is older (which is a plus to me), but there are some newer developments on the outskirts, particularly down Tazewell Pike.

South Knox: A real gem if you know where to look. Very under-appreciated area of Knoxville that has only recently begun to get interest. There are some really neat older neighborhoods here (Island Home, Lindberg Forest, Lake Forest), there is ultra high-end lakefront living, and there are the more middle-class neighborhoods. It also has the benefit of being very close to downtown Knoxville.

Thank you for the information. Can you tell me about Colonial Village. I have seen a few houses for sale there, and always sell quickly. I would like to find a nice neighborhood, family friendly. I do not want to live in a subdivision. I like older homes, and do not mind having to put work into my house. I do not want to buy a complete fixer though. I have also been looking at houses in Fountain City. Any help that I can get is appreciated.

First of all I have to say when I saw your original post I had to laugh just a little bit because my family is relocating from Knoxville to Alaska. Sounds like major changes for all are in store.

Fountain City is going to give you the quaint neighborhood charm that it sounds like you are looking for. The homes for the most part are reasonable priced and aren't cookie cutter like some other parts of town. You'd be about 35 minutes from Maryville depending on the time of day and traffic.

I don't know much about South Knoxville, but I can tell you that there are some nice areas out there. They are really trying to revamp that side of town. Island Homes is one area that is decent that you may want to check out.

In all honesty it really depends on what you are looking for. I work at the University of Tennessee and a majority of my coworkers live in the Corryton and Seymour areas. The commute isn't all that bad and they enjoy being somewhat out in the country. The homes are reasonably priced and it's a feeling where everybody knows your name. Your close enough to downtown to experience any cultural activites, but yet far enough way that you fell like you're living in the country.
