Hey Winnvic, be sure and have a great chimney sweep look at your chimney, and if its in bad shape, they will let you know, and the quick fix, would be some type of metal liner, to make it safe to use. About your car insurance, you need to get several quotes, unless you have teenage drivers, then its always high. Several ways to keep it cheap, so let us know if you have teenagers, as you can put them on a liability only veh, and help keep rates lower. Good luck, and let us know, when you try out Littons.

How much wood is in a cord of firewood?

Thanks for the info! Here in NORTHERN NY, a cord of wood is the length of the log x4'x8' and cost $60-$80. I was confused I have never heard of the term "rick"

Winnvic, Is your fireplace an open fireplace, a woodstove, or a sealed insert with an outdoor air supply? If you are looking to save money on your utilities by heating with wood, an open fireplace may be counter productive. If its not a woodstove,or doesn't have an outdoor air supply, it will pull indoor air that you've paid to heat and send it up the chimney, whlile pulling in cold outdoor air through any air leaks in the home to make up for the pressure difference caused by the chimney effect. If you decide not to use the fireplace because of a problem chimney, you should be sure to close the damper and stuff some scrap insulation up the chimney opening. It's a big leaker of heated air to the outside.

Apparently, "rick" is a term used to measure wood for whiskey barrels or some such nonsense. It doesn't have much to do with actual heating wood terms unless they are trying to confuse Yankees, which is counterproductive since we actually know more about it.

Your right, TheShadow, about the fireplace sucking heat. I went to the "new" FC library and got a book on thse mechanics of woodstoves and fireplaces, etc. and that's what it said, fireplaces for the most part suck out more heat than they contribute, said they were considered a luxury item, as such. But anyone who had or has one knows how on a cold night just being there in close proximity to one of the elements somehow just makes all those worries and cares go up with the flames, doesn't it? Someone told me there's an inflatable ball thingy that you can blow or pump up that will seal the chimney really well when not in use and then if you decide to start using, you just deflate it. I went to Lowe's but the guy there looked at me like I was nuts! Back to my car insurance, I'm the only driver on the policy and I've had State Farm since 1982. The worst was my collision ($500 deductible) went from $138 to $222 for 6 months -nothing different. Does anyone know if different agents in the same city with the same company can charge different rates or do they all use the same reference or chart or whatever they use? I'll definitely have to check out some other companies before I bit that bullet! Hiknapster and Ksurvisor, since you're both in FC, did you see the snowflakes this morning? I couldn't believe it when I was sitting at my computer desk in front of the window and there's were these little white flakes floating down! So Cool, although I'd hoped to ease into the colder weather a little slower than overnight almost! Hiknapster, any success on the firewood yet? Any chance anyone would meet me at Litton's for lunch sometime?

Hi, I'll meet you for Red Velvet cake at Litton's anytime but I won't order any more food there. I thought it was overpriced and mediocre at best.
How are things settling in for you in FC? When Bill and I were house hunting, I thought FC had so much charm.
Hope you are settling in and starting to love being here.
Pam

Winnvic, it's time to shop around. I left State Farm and Farmer's years ago because their rates were so high compared to the other companies. Call Progressive and let them give you their quote plus three other companies' and you may get a surprise. If you are over 50, AARP has a great rate through the Hartford company. We used that this year and we got MORE coverage for less money than with Allstate.

I would love to meet you and everyone else at Litton's.
I have had HUGE success with the firewood. Had Nathan Bemis come down from New Tazewell. That guy was intelligent, honest and boy, did he bring me some beautiful wood and it has to be more than a cord. I paid $185.
I will never get wood from anyone else. Never.
Moderator cut: please DM this info
I have State Farm.
Here's what happened with us. We had Direct Insurance and were paying about $1,800 a year with the two cars. The agent in San Carlos Park stole our last payment. We found out when we got here. It was so stressful, because we were still settling in, getting utilities turned on, enrolling our daughter in school, etc. So after many phone calls, where everyone was apologetic but no one could tell us when we would get our money back...
We switched insurance companies. As a side note, the company also wanted me to work for them. I backed out of that, too.
So we went with Progressive. Their rate was about $800 for the two cars. After a couple of years, it had crept up to about $950.
When we bought the house, this year, we went with State Farm. We have a discount because they insure our home, too. I'm sure that is a big factor. Our insurance is only about $600 or so.
I could refer you to my agent if you want. His name is Monsour Hassan. He's a very nice young man.
