Every large type city I have visited from Ventura, Ca. to Baltimore has these haunts. So, can anyone help us out? In 50's age bracket, but we like to go and do Like to walk the area in evening. Looking for the place to settle, maybe renovate older cottage style and open a home-based studio. No new homes, want a little charm and imagination. Also neighborhood that is all age groups, maybe college near by. Price range mid 100 K. Important too, security neighborhood.
Have you considered the Asheville/Black Mountain North Carolina area? (not necessarily those towns)

they're handing out government housing grants to visual artists here. Anyone want $50k towards a house?

I am also intrigued by the sections of town that they are saying are victorianish.....is that a word? Walkable with artisans homes, and coffee shops. I think Memphis sounds like where I need to be, but because I am older and single maybe that isn't the place either. I have been focused on Knoxville area pretty much, but now I am curious about what neighborhoods Chattanooga have to offer. I can look up zipcodes and neighborhoods on my realtor, or look online for the "savvy, artsy, walkable ones" but does anyone know where these are? I took a short jaunt to chatt, about a year ago, but just drove right thru it, as I was on my way back from visiting another area and was sooooo tired. I think I may have been on the wrong side of town, it was pretty....uuummm!! lets say run down! Sorry
Anyhow any info will help me also

Lightbulb Try a couple of different forums.

Putty, you might want to ask the same question on the Chattanooga forum.

Most people who live there or just visit are very enthusiastic about the Chatty area. They have a wonderful downtown and some of the friendliest folks you will ever get to know.

Also, it might be a good idea to post on the main TN forum and get LOTS of different ideas and opinions.

Hope you find an area that suits all of your needs and interests. Let us hear from you.

I'm brand new to this website and was just browsing through it until I saw this post. Is this serious? We're planning to move to Knoxville and my wife is a visual artist so I'd be interested in more info on the grants that Chattanooga gives out. If it's more than a rumor, let me know!

Coopfoxkilby,

I've read about the artist housing grants in Chattanooga. There was an article about it awhile back, maybe google for it. Chattanooga has really made efforts into making their city a nice place for all types of people. The Knoxville area seems to only be interested in recruiting the "McMansion" types and retired folks. Since your wife is an artist, Knoxville may not be the best choice. This is more of a city of "corporate art" and "sofa paintings".

Explore Chattanooga, Asheville, Black Mountain, Charlotte, and Raleigh NC. Similar grants were available in Raleigh awhile back.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice, pdq. She has family in Knoxville but I've been spending a lot of time online looking at housing in Knoxville and it seems that we might have to live in the suburbs because we have school-aged kids and the schools in the city center have really horrible test scores. Not that there is anything wrong with living in the suburbs, but it's not what we're used to. Thanks again for the advice!

We're in Salt Lake City, Utah. We're hoping to live in the city but it looks like the schools are so much better in the suburbs that we might lean towards those areas. I have a friend in Knoxville that sent me this list of some improving downtown neighborhoods, so if you are still out there kikiart you might want to do a google search for the following neighborhoods:
-Fourth & Gill

-Park Ridge

-Old Historic North Knox

-Oakwood / Lincoln Park

-North Hills

-Fairmont Park / Emoriland

-Island Home (south knoxville)
I was able to find neighborhood association websites for all of them pretty easily, it looks like things are looking up for downtown Knoxville..?.
The trouble we're finding is that the neighborhoods might be getting better but the schools seem to be quite a ways behind so we might be in the wrong stage of life to be 'urban pioneers'...

There are a few artists galleries and shops around the Candy Factory and the Museum of Art.
