Default Is Knoxville moldy?

I have a friend that insists that the areas around the Smokey Mountains are moldy. She figures Knoxville is, as she felt Asheville was, when she visited, and that made her rule it out.

Thanks for any light you can shed.

Umm, moldy??? Not quite sure what you mean with that. A basement might be moldy, a book might get moldy in a damp place but a whole city or area? Do you mean humid? polluted? or the appearance of "smoke' which gives the Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains their hazy look?

Lets define "moldy" so we are on the same page. Last January I visited Mississippi and to me the air, hotel room and restaurants we visited smelled moldy. Knoxville doesn't smell moldy and Asheville didn't strike me that way.

Thanks, I didn't really think it was, but had to ask as my friend was sure that Asheville was...now she was coming from the dry desert (which has it's own issues with mold, believe it or not) but she said all the homes she went in had a smell of mold (or dampness) and she felt the air was polluted. She also said that they get acid rain, do you?

Maybe it was just her "sign" that the area wasn't for her. I believe this can happen if we're being guided to be somewhere else.

I was emailing her last night and she said "oh, Smokey Mountain area is bad due to mold and pollution", but most of you must not think that way if you live there. Incidentally she moved to Oregon where it rains for 6 months straight...to me that feels more moldy and I coudlnt' deal with that.

You know, "moldy" is going to mean different things to different people. I'm not saying there isn't mold in Knoxville but it doesn't smell moldy to me. I'm sure there is a difference coming from a place with dry heat to a place that has humidity.
I can't answer you on acid rain or pollution. The answer to those questions changes depending on who you talk to or what sites statistics are being quoted. All I can say is the air seems fine to me and that is based on the fact that I can breath.
Sounds like you need to visit instead of depending on your friends impressions.
Pam

AG,
Glad to see that Knoxville is on your list! As far as being moldy, I don't see any truth to that. Perhaps her perception of mold smell was something else she couldn't place her finger on. Dewy mornings have a certain smell in the air, but I absolutely love it. Foggy or rainy days also have a certain smell in the air, but nothing I would find misplesaing. Homes, on the otherhand, can be a different story. Many homes with a basement, particularly homes with every wall built underground, as opposed to a walkout basement, can certainly have an underground smell. Older homes that don't have the current insulation and buidling standards can be more apparent. But as a whole, our city I deem to be not moldy. I have to friends who have severe allergies, but don't have any problems outdoors, except a bit during the pollen season.

One person's "mold" is another person's "dew."

One person's "dry" is another person's "brown."

So true...it's good that the whole world doesn't want to live in Knoxville!

I was thinking the same thing.

I'll tell you what, I have seen moldy and it is not here.

Try Fort Myers, Florida. Hurricanes come through and drop all that rain and leave behind 100 percent humidity. And the power is out for DAYS, sometimes WEEKS. It's a dirty little secret that no one wants to talk about, they'd rather dump the house on someone else.

Add to it the streets lined with houses where people just walked away. In many cases, the electric has not been turned on in months but a couple of years is possible.

Now that, my friend, is mold.
