My first thought when I read about the hippies in Maryville was , WHAT???????
My second thought when someone suggested Asheville was, ARE YOU NUTS????????
My third thought after reading the other posts about the ride people in Asheville was this observation. You must be either wearing a sweatshirt that says something like "America Love it or Leave it", or bringing up the topic in conversation to get those responses. Unless your husband was with you and in uniform, I don't know how anyone would pick you out as a military wife unless you advertised yourself as one.
I can honestly say that I have not heard any derogatory comments about the military since the Viet Nam war. Comments about Bush? Yes. The military? Haven't heard them.
Having spent a weekend in Asheville with the family, I can't remember ANY conversation with strangers that had anything to do with politics, the war, drugs or other hippie subversive activities, and Obama was in Asheville that day.
If you find Maryville too liberal for you, then Knoxville is probably not the place for you. Like someone else suggested, Morgan and Scott Counties might be a better fit.
Hope you can find a place to your liking.

Just a question......when you traveled in the military did you find the same things? Did you travel to different countries with your husband? Hope you find a place to call home for sure. I moved here a year and a half ago and now Knoxville is home and I love it.

That's what I thought too. I live in Maryville, and had to laugh out loud at that comment.
I don't know where you went, but the majority of Maryvillians (is that a word?) tend to be salt-of-the-earth conservative people who are as enamored with their football as they are our wonderful armed forces. They are patriotic, responsible and caring. There are some extremely talented artistic people here, and coming from someone who has NO artistic talent, I am appreciative of the differences offered here. I don't like cookie-cutter towns, with everyone on the same page. I like flavor in my surroundings.
I agree with others, though. If Maryville is too colorful for you, then Knoxville definitely won't be a good choice for you either.

I'm still wondering about all the talk about hippie types and the military. I'm as liberal as they come, and a veteran of the USAF. They are not mutually exclusive. I'm not trying to discount the OP's feelings, but I don't know anyone who discriminates against the military in the last ten years, and I live in California. I'm wondering what brings up all these conversations in which she gets offended? Sometimes we need to look inward to see what other people are reflecting back to us.

I'm with you, buddy. Your post is so dead on.
I'll say something else. I'm very liberal, and the one military person that I have seen (he was in the laundry room at a campground so it was obvious that he was in the military, due to his laundry) I hugged and told him, "thank you."
I may not agree with the war in Iraq, but that has nothing to do with someone signing up to protect this country. It is a brave and honorable thing to do.
Everyone is free to do what they like and move where they want, but meshing with other people can be a wonderful thing. There is too much hate that is stirred up by very few.
Like this "Merry Christmas" thing. How many people are truly offended by the phrase "Merry Christmas?" Or is it just a bunch of blabbermouths that only make money if they stir up hate and craziness. I know the phrase doesn't bother me at all.
Anyway, I just think some people have preconceived notions about what and how certain groups think. If we all got to know each other we just might like each other.
I still can't get over it. Maryville. Hippies.

Thank you!! (also Hik). I am tired of people with progressive views being labeled as somehow "unpatriotic"!!! I know many card-carrying democrats who have served in the military. My cousin spent three years in Afghanistan and votes democratic. My good friend was in the Gulf War and opposed the Iraq War. Many in our military come from backgrounds where the service is viewed as a catalyst to achieve a better life for themselves and their family. My friend was raised in an environment where he was never really encouraged or even told how to get into college. Coming from a poor family, he knew that the army could pay him well and pay for him to go to college. Somehow I doubt that many of the people who got us into the Iraq War really ever had to worry about those type of things....

And here's something that no one has touched on. "Bars to country dance?" Are there places like that around here? The only one I can think of is The Electric Cowboy and that is probably not what the OP had in mind. Too many college kids with their varied points of view. Oh, and according to the radio ads, the girls are encouraged to wear as little as possible.

Honestly, I am fine with being called a hippie of Maryville if that keeps more folks from moving in.
