Any thoughts to this phenomenon?

I kind of like the cool, misty "English" days we get in the winter.

Me too. Just experienced a few on my visit and didn't mind it a bit.

Based on the posts here, it seems like more families are coming from Florida.
I think that you are forgetting that many people who move to FL come from places that are much colder than here. But I agree that it is younger people, not FL retirees, that are coming here. The retirees are coming from Michigan and Ohio.

Yep. I'm originally from Mass., and these winters (and falls and springs, for that matter) are a walk in the park!

If I come directly here, I would probably think that the heat is brutal, but after "doin' my time" in Florida, I think that the summers are not very hot at all.

You certainly did tell the truth. I for one have witnessed those same behaviors not only in the outdoors but in our schools. And, sanitation and cleaniness is not willingly learned--not when it isn't inherently important in the original culture and lifestyle. One would have to 'live it; to 'believe it.'

Retirees are home during the daytime and outdoors more during the daytime than most dayshift workers so I think weather (sunshine vs cloudy/overcast and how hot or cold it is) is more of a mood/function factor in our lives. I didn't care how hot/cold (or grey) it was when I was in the workforce five out of seven days and one day of the weekend was always spent on errands. All I cared about was snow and ice. Now, I'm more attuned to the weather which I check online usually twice a day, for 10 days in advance. I like cloudy days because it's better for photography and I function better when temps are in the 40s/50s but I could see how grey/overcast and cold weather might be a downer for other retirees simply because we're out in it more than the average worker.

I think before people move here they inquire about the snow (and tornadoes) but forget to ask about the rainy and grey days, especially if they are coming from a gulf coast state, because it's not a factor in their lives now. And just because we don't get much snow, doesn't mean it doesn't get cold. I'm thinking if you are moving here from the state of Washington, for example, the grey, rainy and cold days in Tennessee might not be as big of a deal as it would be to a retiree coming from Florida.

And, if you work outdoors or on the night shift, I'd guess you'd feel like the retirees.

Like today! It's very cool looking outside and seeing the mist in the trees. I bet the Smokies look beautiful. It's even warm outside. I was in my back yard wiping muddy dog feet in my jammies and I wasn't cold. Although, I'm sure my neighbors could have lived their entire life without seeing that.

When I woke up and saw the sun I knew I could look forward to a day of brutal sun where wearing makeup was impossible, the only hair style was "up," and the only clothing option was "not much." It was so darn humid that I felt like I was walking through water.
Ditto. I think I had reverse SADD. I used to wish for cloudy, rainy days.
