How funny that this thread was resurrected. I was in Cookeville on Tuesday and ate at Back Yard Burger on campus at Tennessee Tech. It's still the best restaurant burger I've ever had. If I could have a Back Yard Burger with Five Guys fries, I would be in paradise.
I do like Red Robin, however. But with Litton's right here in Fountain City, I can't see driving out to West Knoxville to eat at Red Robin. But I am glad that RR is finally coming to Knoxville.

I'm also excited that Red Robin is almost open. My two favorites here are still Five Guys and Fuddrucker's though. I also like Back Yard Burgers when I'm craving a flame broiled burger.
And since we are bringing this topic up again, I also had the chance to try Gridiron Burgers for the first time earlier this week. I was expecting it to be on the same level as Five Guys, Fuddrucker's and Red Robin, but I was really disappointed. The burger was dry, tasteless, and more expensive than any of the other places ($9.50 for a burger, fries, and drink). Also, they say they are handmade, but it tasted and looked more like a processed thickburger (like Hardees). Also, the handcut fries were soggy (not double fried like Five Guys). I don't eat many toppings on my burger, so maybe that's what was supposed to be good. I'm more into the flavor of the actual meat itself and Gridiron's was flavorless. I know it's a locally owned chain, but I'm sorry it is nowhere near the level of the Five Guys, Fuddrucker's, Red Robin, Steak 'n Shake, or even Back Yard Burger. I know they've already closed their Clinton Hwy. location, and I wouldn't be surprised if they close entirely after Red Robin opens. I was bummed too, because I was really in the mood for a good burger and had been looking forward to trying it for a long time.
Oh well, as long as Five Guy's stays, I'm happy. I guess my rankings for burgers locally would be;
1. Five Guy's
2. Fuddrucker's
3. Steak 'n Shake
4. Back Yard Burgers
I'll reserve judgement on Red Robin till it opens, since I haven't had it in a while. And if we are talking about favorite burgers on a national level, my all time favorite is still Jackson Hole (a chain in New York City). Two other favorites I discovered while traveling are Wallbanger's (a Fuddrucker's knockoff, but better, in Corpus Christi, TX), and Blue Sky restaurant in Amarillo, TX. Both are top notch for great burgers.

Please feel free to spread the word and invite everyone out for an insanely delicious burger, and as always, yes we will anounce the charity we will be donating to 3 weeks prior to the grand opening. OP here, I wanna toss in a place I just found out about and get some reaction. Never heard anyone talk about it here, but have any of you tried Denton's Big Orange Steakery? Friends of ours were scoping out Knoxville last month and came across one of the two (?) locations in Knoxville.

Yes. The reason it hasn't been mentioned here is because it is unremarkable. Ho-hum. Etc. There are far better places to spend my calories and remaining meals here on earth imho.

Agree with Smoky, it is so so. Although, they do have a decent chili dog, and they're owned by Wishbones, which is right across the street from the Kingston Pike location. Or maybe Denton's owns Wishbones, I dunno. Either way, Dentons does have really good iced tea which you can get at either location. But the burgers...not so much, kinda tasted like old school cafeteria soy burgers to me......
If I had to list the ten places in Knoxville to stop for a burger, they'd be (in no real particular order):
1. Red Robin (coming soon)
2. Five Guys
3. Littons
4. Sam and Andy's
5. Fuddruckers
6. Old College Inn
7. Gridiron
8. Hardees
9. Back Yard Burger
10. Ruby Tuesday
