Knoxville Monthly Utility Bill
Hello,
I've recently taken a job at Oak Ridge SNS where I am to report early April. I currently reside in San Diego, California in military housing. I have no experience in personal cost of utility bills since I have been in the military ever since I graduated. I didn’t pay attention to the bills when I lived at home and ever since I’ve moved out I have had all utility cost automatically deducted from my check before I ever got it.
So I am looking for a close estimate of what my utility bills will be in Knoxville after I relocate. I’ll be supporting a 4 person household when I get to Knoxville in April. So any insight you can give me into an average utility bill for a 4 person household in Knoxville Tennessee would be greatly appreciated.
Utilities to include:
Electric
Water
Gas
Sewer
Trash
Thank you in advance

I hope you enjoy Knoxville!
As for how much utilities will cost, that can vary quite a bit depending on the type of home you have. My friends who live in a 2BR/1.5BA townhouse pay around $70/month total, that includes electricity, gas, water, and garbage. I live in an older home (1947) that doesn't have good insulation, I pay on average $160/month for everything. Newer homes would probably be less, depending on how large they are. Plus, there's only one of me, and if you have four people in your home you'll use considerably more hot water.
If your job is in Oak Ridge, are you going to live in Oak Ridge?

My house has gas heat. My bill last month was $240. But in the summer my house uses no gas, so my utility bills are considerably less. But the 12-month average for my utility bills is $160 / month.

One of the benefits of TVA power and a mild climate.
Trash will be included with your taxes if you live in the city. You will have to pay for it if you live in unincorporated areas of the county.
In Knox, Blount and Loudon Counties, outside of the city, fire protection is provided by Rural Metro. You really should pay for this as well, because if you have a fire you'll be getting the bill for services otherwise. I think the rate is about $0.09 per sq foot, per year. No charge if you live in the city, there's the City Fire Department there.
