I agree. In fact, I'm seeing a lot more crime in West Knoxville, too. I mean, I don't live there, but watching it on the news.

I still have anxiety attacks over that case. I drive very near there going to work.

I'm afraid this will turn out like Orlando, where nice neighborhoods got invaded. The druggies need money, so they start moving into the good neighborhoods.

Once again, I think the cops here are great. They are very good at catching them, just not so good at keeping them. Lot of escapes!

Haven't looked much into the schools as we're not moving until school is no longer an issue for us. Don't get me wrong though, south end of this county is pretty rural and if the history still stands, I believe it's at that end of the county where the drugs are. I bought in a very nice subdivison with very minimal restrictions even allowing farm animals but enough restrictions to make sure there will always be nice homes in the area and yet enough land with each lot. no lots under 1.5 acres along the river and many up around 6 acres or more. It's 5 miles outside of town. We found this subdivision by accident and fell in love with the views and location was great. Point being, I was told not to buy in a specific area but after i did my own research, i found my little piece of heaven there. It's great to get some feedback on general areas to avoid but i was under the impression when i was searching that the entire county was bad which turned out only parts were. Good luck on your search.
Cocke County, that's where my wife is from. There are areas, mostly in the hollows that you really don't want to go but that's almost any county around here. The people there are great. Most of the reputation came from rednecks from all areas going to the bars that were once there. There was a lot of people that got shot or beat pretty bad. The county as are many around, is still where you have to be able to back up your words physically, that's why we try to be polite. Dialing 911 is usually an afterthought. My wife is from the Edmina Bridgeport area, once remote and now when we visit her parents there is a lot of houses there.
I live in White Pine close to the Cocke County line. If your considering Newport don't let the reputation scare you, as long as your respectful of others it is a great place with great people. This time of year however don't go on a scenic joy ride into the hollows here or other counties. One the funniest stories I remember was a few Pot Helicopters getting shot down in Cocke County. Meth Labs can be many places but I think they are a problem in many places. Don't eat fish caught from the Pigeon River, a paper mill in NC has polluted it and has for years.

My grandparents live in East Knox...

The actual neighborhood they live in is really really old, but very nice. Mostly senor citizens and family's...
However, only a couple miles down the road there public housing and run down houses/apartments.

I have lived in Knoxville all 42 years of my life. I have been to all but 8 of the states and so far I still love East Tennessee and specifically Knoxville best of all. While I am biased, I would recommend Knoxville and E Tenn to anyone.

For those looking to move a family to the east side of town, I would suggest looking at the Blaine area. It is a small town a few short miles from East Knoxville and actually closer to Morristown. Blaine is farm town with mostly Christian folks. To give you a mental picture of the area, it is known for Indian Cave (a local attraction) and the small rodeo. The worse drug stuff you will find there is a few marijuana smokers and a handful of beer drinkers. You won't see any of this in public but the gosip vine will let you know who's who. Its an 'old school' community of decent, polite folks just full of southern hospitality.

The other choices within commuting distance of Morristown would be to look at Sevierville and Jefferson City. Both are great places to raise kids. Just bare in mind that this is East Tenn and not New York. We are mostly rural communities in Tenn. Downtown Knoxville and Sevierville have all modern buildings and normal city folk stuff. The surrounding areas are definitely rural. I wish the best for all who move here. My hat is off and I welcome y'all with a big grin an even bigger 'HOWDY DOO, NEIGHBOR !!!'

Well i'm used of living in a place where the "residents make their own rules". I grew up in a town similar to that in N.H. and like you said, just be polite, stay out of the bad business and don't be a rat on any of the bad guys and they'll leave you alone. Thankfully i bought in a nice area where decent sized nice looking homes are a requirement. Just found out one of my neighbors is a retired FL police officer and a few lots away is a TN state trooper so that's kind of nice. How is the French Broad river? Is that faily clean? Reason i ask is because the subdivision i bought in also has lots along that river for sale. I don't eat fish anyways but it still would be nice to know if the water is decent. We did take some back roads down by Cosby and boy, a few times i was a bit scared of what we were driving through. In fact, i was quite disgusted what these people could live in. Yeah, i know exactly what was going on those homes. Anyways, we're very happy where we bought and can't wait to move.

French Broad is a very clean river in comparison to the other rivers in this area. It has a huge variety of game fish and is a summer hotspot for smallmouth! Try buzz baits and lots of Chartreusse and white or white and silver. Couldn't resist the fishing tip! But it is a great place to live
