Default What about Farragut?

We're moving to TN this summer, the Knoxville area. I've driven through Farragut and Maryville. They seem quite different, but both seem very nice. I've heard a lot about Maryville from this site and a co-worker of my husband. Can anyone share their opinion about Farragut. I've heard it also has very good schools.
Thanks
yboud

Hey jboud, Farragut is great, and the school systems are rated high, and Farragut has many styles and choices for any type of housing and styles you want. Probably a little higher priced, than most of the Maryville choices. I do not want to sound too prejudice, as our daughter went to Farragut, than graduated from U.T. So, do some good touring and get the best feel after that. I also answered your other post, and talked about Hardin Valley.

I lived in Knoxville for three years, until about 8 months ago. If I was to move back to Knoxville, I would absolutely move to Farragut. It's a great area, and as a "transplant" (moving in from somewhere else) I believe you would have an easier adjustment in Farragut than other parts of Knoxville. Really, living anywhere in West Knoxville is fine, but Farragut may be your best bet. Of course, it is also a more expensive area too. JMHO. Good luck with the move! I loved it there!

yboud,

Yes, Farragut is a very nice area. As was pointed out, it is typically the highest priced area of Knoxville, but some good deals can be found if you look around. Also, as far as schools, you probably cannot do any better. I remember reading that Farragut schools were always one of the top ranked systems in the state. (Oak Ridge and Maryville are the other highly ranked systems in the Knoxville area).

You will find some people on the forum that will steer you away from Farragut and West Knoxville because it is the home of most of the newer, expensive development (and home to many McMansions). But that is really unfair. It all depends on what you are personally looking for. It is true that you will not find much in the way of older, or historic homes or areas in Farragut or the west end of the county. It's generally newer, upscale subdivisions. If you are looking for older, historic type homes then Maryville (or neighborhoods in North Knoxville like Ftn. City) would be a better choice. But if you want neat, new subdivisions with lots of amenities, that is in the heart of the shopping and dining area, then Farragut is your choice.

Most of the biggest retailers have made Farragut and West Knoxville their prime target over the past 20 years. Farragut is home to Turkey Creek (one of the largest shopping, dining, entertainment areas in the state). Also, you are close to West Town Mall and the many stores and restaurants that line the 6 or 7 miles of Kingston Pike and Parkside Drive in between West Town and Turkey Creek. So if convenience is a concern, then Farragut is certainly in "the heart" of it all.

Also, pretty much the same goes for the Hardin Valley area. It is also located in the western part of the county and is adjacent to Farragut and west Knoxville, so you have easy access to all of the same things. Generally, Hardin Valley is a bit more rural, or outlying than Farragut, but HV is growing quickly and many new businesses are popping up there now as well.

Either way, you can't go wrong. Personally, I would choose Farragut or Hardin Valley over Maryville, but that is purely a personal choice and both are great places. I lived in Maryville years ago and didn't like the traffic and the drive to Knoxville, (but that was before Pellisippi Pkwy. was opened in the early 90's, so it is now a much easier commute from Maryville to west Knox.) But just visit both and look around. I think you'll be pleased with either, and both will be great for schools.

My Mom lives in Farragut and loves it! It is a great area for transplants.

Farragut does not have its own school system. It's part of Knox County Schools. Individual schools in Farragut may receive high marks, but there are other schools within Knox County that do, too.

I know I'm splitting hairs here, but 90% of Turkey Creek is in Knoxville, not Farragut. I believe Gander Mountain and Best Buy are in Farragut, but the rest is in Knoxville's city limits.

Regardless, I can understand why Farragut is a popular place for many people. I'm single and prefer older neighborhoods, so it's not my cup of tea. But if I wanted a suburban lifestyle, Farragut is definitely a good choice.

That really is splitting hairs. For all intents and purposes, I'd say most people would consider Turkey Creek to be in Farragut. Yes, a sign denotes that most of it is technically in Knoxville, but that doesn't matter when you're actually there.

Default thanks

Thanks for all the info. I certainly have my work cut out for me in the research department. I did like a couple of houses in the Fountain City area but I also liked some very much in the Hardin Valley area too. I discovered Turkey Creek when I visited in Nov. 2008 and was blown away...it's shopping heaven. Though I'm not sure how close I want to be to all that temptation, lol. I'm so glad I found this web site y'all have been a big help! Thanks
yboud
