I'm trying to think what retirement town is 15 miles west of Crossville. Monterey? Cumberland Cove?
Anyway, I concur with what the others have said. The temperature differences between Knoxville and Chattanooga are negligible.
Knoxville may have more yuppies than Chattanooga but only because the Knoxville area has more people than the Chattanooga area. Neither place is very trendy although I suppose West Knox / Farragut would come closest.

And I said what sort of environment I want. I like diversity but I don't want to be surrounded by A LOT of yuppies!! And especially people who don't like, nor respect, Christians. I think I made perfect sense in what I wrote. I was just asking for opinions/comparisons between the two cities - and also about the weather in the summer.

I hardly ever hear the term yuppie any more, so I guess that I don't even know what it means now. If by yuppie you mean socially liberal hyper-consuming young professionals, then no, there are hardly any yuppies in Knoxville.
Are you seriously concerned that Knoxville is not conservative Christian enough? Knoxville is firmly in the Bible Belt and is primarily conservative Christian. It does have its share of hyper-consuming young professionals, but they tend to be social conservatives, not social liberals. Knox County voted over 60% for John McCain in 2008, so it is one of the more conservative counties in the country with a substantial population (and more conservative than Hamilton county by that voting metric). If you stay away from the University and ORNL and avoid reading the Metropulse, then you can probably go quite some time without meeting anyone with significantly different opinions than yourself.

I think there are people in Knoxville that would offend the OP. You do bump into people who are anti-Christian, though they are a small but sometimes vocal minority.
I myself hate to see the animosity build up between cultures. I just had an ex neighbor make a snide comment to me about greedy capitalists and I forgot I needed to speak up and say "hey, I'm a capitalist, you know" Greed is a separate issue, and it occurs in all kinds of economic systems.
It's also weird that some of the biggest pro-capitalists are conservative Christians. Because what Jesus preached was a socialist lifestyle.

Not really seeing it
I think like minded attracts like minded wherever you are - or maybe that's me? My neighborhood association is mainly liberal Christian. My boyfriend's synagogue is not Christian at all. My neighborhood is not conservative. My former neighborhood was not conservative either, though it would seem the vast majority was Christian. Knoxville does have three synagogues, ORNL, Metro Pulse, UTK, Hard Knox Rollergirls, the SCA, the Old City, Boomsday, Knoxville Skate Park, Laurel High, Pluto Sports, and other cool things that the OP would probably not be interested in, etc. On the yuppie side, we have Webb School, Farragut, Turkey Creek, The Symphony, Tennessee Theatre, The Bijou and pretty much all of West Knoxville.
Mass consumerism and tourism? Go anywhere near Sevierville, Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg.
We also have a very large conservative Christian population.
We are a metropolitan area - with all that has to offer.

Please give us your definition of Yuppies. Although to me it sounds as if you are looking for others who are exactly as yourself and you will probably not be happy surrounded by others who are not as you are. I doubt Knoxville is for you as Knoxville has many fifferent people and we all get along just fine and we all aren't conservative christians either. Why would you limit yourself? You are interested in moving to a new place, yet it seems that you are looking for the same thing you have where you are? Isn't the point of moving somewhere new to have a different cultural experience and meet new people who are different? Moving should broaden ones horizons and offer new experiences and make ones life that much more interesting.
Just my mho,
Pam

I don't "limit myself" nor do I mind people being different than myself!! Why are you so judgmental? I live in a place right now that is HIGHLY intolerant of conservatives and hate Christians. I'm not intolerant of others and don't hate but I would like to be a place where I'm able to NOT be hated and able to make a few friends.
You should watch what you write to others. You don't know me, nor my heart, and I find what you wrote to be highly presumptuous and judgmental.

Thanks for your input. But "like minded" does not always attract "like minded". If you're vastly outnumbered it's hard to find kindred souls.

I asked for opinions regarding Knoxville and Chattanooga. I didn't ask for criticisms nor critiques on capitalism, conservatism, Christianity nor Jesus Christ (who, by the way, if you were a believer you'd know he didn't preach a "socialist lifestyle). I find it incredibly sad that, once again, people find it necessary to spout their own, personal agendas when all I did was ask opinions about Knoxville vs. Chattanooga. This is most unkind and unnecessary.

Through individual giving, not through Gov't mandated and controlled actions with fines if you do not give "enough". A BIG difference.
Fortunately from what I read on these forums, TN is reasonably tolerant of a variety of beliefs and practices.
