My daughter misses the kindergarten cutoff of September 30 by 5 days. We recently moved to Morristown, TN and have had her on schedule to start school. However, due to the cutoff here, we are having an issue. We really don't want her just sitting around for an extra year, bored out of her mind repeating all of the stuff she has already done in pre-k etc... She is clearly ready for kindergarten. I'm assuming other people have had this problem arise, the school board doesn't seem to want to cooperate with us. My understanding is that in many states, when this issue arises, their is early enrollment testing available. Does anybody know if that is available here in eastern Tennessee and if so, how do we go about doing it and who do we contact?

Thank you.

Sorry to say I do not have an answer for you.
Have you considered a private school? I "think" they are more flexible on their cutoff dates. Montessori would be a good thing to look into also.

Does your daughter already know all of her sight words, can she read simple books? Can she write sentences? Does she know how to count to 100, and recognize the numbers? Does she know her money? My son is in Kindergarten this year and it is very, very different than preschool. He has learned a ton, but it has also been a lot of work for him. I would not jump to the conclusion that your daughter will be bored.

JG,

I as well don't have an answer for you, but maybe there's a teacher on here that can help. I would suggest trying this web page for some assistance:
OEL_Central Office (http://www.tennessee.gov/education/prek/prekcontact.shtml - broken link)
It's the TN gov office of pre-k and early learning, and I'm sure someone there may have some info to assist you, either in enrolling early via some testing, or finding proper education to fill in the year gap if that's a must. Best of luck with the Young Einstein!
