I've been gone, but I just got my letter and I hopped right onto city data... I figured this would be the place to commiserate!
Well, you all know I bought my house in October 2008. I paid less than the 2004 tax value of 47000. I just got my letter saying my house is now worth $70,600!
Wow, that's incredible equity I've built isn't it? Considering that the only thing I've done to the place is have the asbestos siding torn off (and not yet replaced) and refinished the floors (not even all of them and I still have no baseboards) myself.
The roof leaks, I have missing gutters, I have missing soffits and torn soffits, I have house rot, I have missing paint. It looks like a tar paper shack. I have boarded windows, yes, yes I do.
Anyone want to give me 70K?
Thought not.
I'll see you all in the appeals line. Too bad they don't care about my job and my time.

Do it online. I haven't been working, but I'm too sick to stand in a line. The link should be on your paper.

Been following this thread rather quietly as I had yet to get my new tax appraisal info sheet, so I really had no place to say a thing. Well I got it today. Most of you know, I live up the road in the Tri-Cities, Washington County. My appraisal amount went up 10k. This means the tax bill will go up less than $50, even less if the millage rate goes down as the state says it must if the appraisal rate goes up. From what I am hearing this is about the same everyones went up, not much, just the usual equity growth over the 5 year span. This is the same for all the counties in this part of TN from what I can see. So here is my question, what is going on in Knox county to have these appraisal amounts go up so high there? Have there been any articles in the Sentinel or anything? Are they trying to cover the cost of the I-40 rebuild or something? There has to be some reason why Knox county appraisal rates jumped SOOO high compared to other counties in east TN. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I-40 is state and fed funding. There was an article in the paper but it didn't say anything. Knox property reappraisals up : Business : Knoxville News Sentinel The tax assessor is new to his role and out to make a name for himself. The county mayor is still Ragsdale. Enough said. Remember the p-card fiasco? Remember our fine Knox County Commissioners (Lumpy and friends?). Ugh. I have not been able to find a reasonable answer for the increases.

Aquarijen, y'all take a rubber check....
IMHO, seems like the tax appraiser needs to get off his butt and physically look at the properties.... Guess the pen is mighterier than the sword....

They did drive by and look at my little house. Spent a long time eyeballing my walk-in solar collector. Guess they didn't know how to classify it.

Queston
So if the county mayor's budget goes through and he says no tax increase does that mean no increase to the milleage? But if the assessor says the appraisal increased then your actual dollar in taxes will go up? I am out of the loop on terms the government throws out.
Thanks

Local TV news has given the mayor umpteen chances to explain the budget. For me the explanation is a whitewash. Here's why and I hope I am wrong.
He keeps saying there is no increase in the tax mil rate; however, keeping the same rate and raising the appraised value, doesn't that result in the homeowner paying more tax? I'm confused.

Judging by what you wrote, the answer is "yes."
By the way, I'm not appealing because I just don't have a leg to stand on. Appraisal is about $300 more than we paid for it.
