Oak Ridge, Tuskegee Drive Area, dead end road?
My partner and I were driving around in Oak Ridge this past weekend. We've been looking at houses in the area and considering a move. We drove down a street called Tuskegee Drive. We found it unusual that the road kind of came to a dead end (actually ran out of pavement and turned to gravel). It seemed odd to us, being so close to the city. Can anyone shed any light on what's up with that part of town?

Tuskegee Dr is actually not a dead end road. It turns into gravel, off which there are a number of properties set back from the road on a few to 15 acres. Eventually, Tuskegee pops out near or on Gum Springs Rd.
I actually looked at a property on this drive last year. It is still for sale now, in fact (for about a 100 less than they were originally asking). It needs work, but has potential. On 10+ acres and very private. It's an unusual setting for its proximity to the commercial strip of Oak Ridge and ORNL.

It is actually Wiltshire Drive on the other end of the gravel road. Every few years, at least when I lived in Oak Ridge, they would talk about paving it, but the people who own those properties threw a fit every time. They like being secluded and aren't keen on the idea of having a lot of cut-through traffic.

One of my memories of high school is I had a friend who lived in Scarboro and another who lived on Wiltshire and we'd be driving down that bumpy road with the song "roundabout" playing on the radio of my 55 chevy. Back when it was a teenagers' car and not a valuable antique.
It was kind of interesting how you had the poorer part of town connected to the richer part, kind of like a circle turning back on itself.
Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

So is that gravel road a city/county road or a private road?

It is a public (not private) road, within Oak Ridge City limits.
I like the description of this gravel road as a kind of surprising connection between the commerical district and some nice countryesque properties.
