Just got back from my 3 day trip to Knoxville. I've never been there at this time of the year, and was treated to trees that were full of beautiful flowers. I saw loads of smaller trees that were filled with small white flowers. What type of tree were they? Dogwoods possibly?
I also saw similar sized trees displaying pink, purple or red flowers too. Again, what kinds of trees are these? Do they flower only once during the year? Please provide the common names, not the genus and species. Thanks!

Dogwoods for the white and redbuds for the deep pink and red. Those are in bloom right now. They are lovely, aren't they? Only bloom in the spring.
The Magnolias and honeysuckle will be blooming soon. You'll need to come back.

Pears are already done. There are both pink and white flowering dogwoods and flowering crabapple trees in bloom right now. Maybe some redbuds, but they're about finished also.

Yeah the pear and redbuds in my yard bloomed a few weeks ago, but the white and pink dogwoods are still glorious. The various Dogwood Trails around town still look awesome particularly since the azaleas are also in bloom. The wysteria are about done, unfortunately.

I love the legend of the dogwood, too. Legend has it that wood from dogwoods was used to build the cross upon which Jesus was crucified, and so to this day dogwoods--ashamed of their role in the crucifixion of Jesus--grow twisted so that their wood can never again be used to make long planks capable of building another cross, and their blossoms are in the shape of the cross and have little red dots to symbolize where the nails were pounded through Christ's hands and feet.

Again, Professor, excellent description for the dogwoods, and one of the best either in white or pink.

This is correct.

Starting at about the middle of March the Bradford Pears herald the beginning of spring at it lasts for quite some time. Spring in Knoxville is gorgeous.

You are so right! And we're fortunate here that just about the time we get tired of one season the next one comes along. And every time the seasons change I am reminded why I love living here.
