Since you can easily get from one side of Knoxville to the other in a relatively short amount of time, it's really not that big of a deal.

What is Karns? I can't find it on the google map. Is it N, S, E or W?

I went to Google Maps, typed in "Karns, TN" and it came right up.
It's in NW Knox County along Oak Ridge Highway (Hwy 62).

I found it......maybe I spelled it wrong. Is it a community? What's there as far as shopping or places for kids to work?

There are generally tons of jobs for teens near West Town Mall, but just like every other city in America, there are a lot of out of work professionals and blue-collar adults on the job market that are having to settle for these jobs. I wouldn't want to be a teen looking for work right now, let alone anyone.

MMOM:
I think this is the link that is REALLY going to help you. Play around with it.
Find Homes By Area
If you use the map link, you can scroll around and see lots of things for sale. It will show you the mall, down Kingston Pike. You can find Karns, too, as well as Fountain City, where I live.
This will start to give you a good grasp of the area and what is for sale.

What about renting? I want to take everyone's advice and rent for a year. We will still have our house here in Florida, which will be rented so I don't think I can afford to own two houses. Is there a link for rental properties in the area?

Look on Craigslist. I second the suggestion of looking near West Town. Preferably within walking distance for the teens. There's a big neighborhood just south of the Mall and a smaller one west of it.
You might place a "wanted to rent" ad with your criteria.

Good idea....I will do that. What about rental agents? Are there people willing to take you around to homes for rent?

Cedar Bluff or Bearden. Plenty of apartments.
