There are bars in Knoxville, support groups and churches that are very accepting. I have no idea about Townsend. It is very small. I would suggest calling one of the bars and asking. The Rainbow Club seems to be very popular.

Townsend is VERRRRY quiet and I think it intends to stay that way, which is great. It can be a long drive to Knoxville. You're closer to Maryville, but Knoxville will be more alternate-lifestyle accepting (I could not find any gay clubs/groups in Maryville online). I would say try the Unitarian Churches first.

As has been said, I can't think of a gay friendly oranization or church in Townsend or all of Blount County. You could probably live in Laurel Valley subdivision and no one would bother you, but other parts not so much.

Unfortunately, if you're gay you have two options to live comfortable. One is living in an urban setting. The other is living in a COMPLETELY remote setting. Townsend/Blount is more between the two - rural-to-suburban, and the kinds of people that tend to populate there are less than welcoming in the South.

Now aren't there gay guys running a B&B in Newport???? I'd say it's like most of rural TN, don't ask, don't tell. You'd have to go to Knoxville for your social life.
My suggestion: settle in a hilly part of South knoxville or Holston Hills and pretend you're in the mountains. That way it won't be such a long drive home.
