Jason, we are leaving NW Montana for pretty much the same reasons as you are and yes, my son will miss being within 15 minutes of one major ski resort and within 1/2 hour of another and we will miss being 15 minutes from Glacier Park but 9 months of winter (it's currently snowing and blowing) and not seeing the sun for weeks on end have gotten very old. We're looking into Maryville as well and having lived in the south in various places in the past we pretty much know what to expect. I don't think you'll be disappointed after the culture shock wears off. There's so much to do in the south and most of the time you'll be wearing shorts when you do it, a big plus for me! I'm willing to drive to other areas for my son to snowboard and if I have to take him a couple of times to vermont and such that's fine. I prefer boats and lakes to snow anyway.
Ya never know, maybe we'll run into each other sometime! Good luck!

jabogitlu thanks we were looking at Ober Gatlinburg. How long does it actually take from Maryville to there?
|
Hmm, I'm not all that familiar with Maryville; there may be a more southernly, alternate route that I'm not aware of. But if you're going up to hit I-40 then east through Knox into Sevier, probably an hour, an hour and a half on the weekends for traffic in Sevier.

To get from Maryville to the Smoky Mountains, I would avoid I-40 like the plague. Take US411 from Maryville to Seymour, and then US441 from Seymour to Sevierville and on down to Gatlinburg. It's a beautiful drive. It might not be as adventurous as white-knuckling your steering wheel up Alcoa Hwy and over on I-40, but it makes up for it in natural beauty.

Ah, thanks, JMT. I thought 441 might come in there somewhere. When I lived downtown I always took Chapman Hwy straight shot into Sevierville.

I hear'ya jimj,
It has been snowing here for the last 2 days on and off and they said were are expecting another foot tonight and tomorrow.
My wife's biggest concern is the bugs and the humidity. She does not like either one. Myself being from the south I too know pretty much what to expect too. What's funny is my wife was born and raised in California in a small ski town. She has never lived in the south but it is amazing how much she acts like she is from the south. People even sometimes ask her is she is from the south when they talk to her. It's probably that small town thing. So I think she'll be okay in that reguard.
I love boats too and we would probably buy one if we move there.
I would really like to hear from the locals on the Humidity and bugs? Are the mosquito's really bad in the summer? What is the temperature and humidity like compared to the Nashville area?
Thanks

To go to Gatlinburg from Maryville we go down 321 and stay on it until we get to 321/441; providing the weather allows. In the summertime when we are really in it for the drive we go 321 and then at Wears Valley we go into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and then cut up 441 and into Gatlinburg. That is a gorgeous drive.

I totally agree with SMG--321, etc. IS the most peaceful, beautiful, scenic way. Of course, except during the heavily traffic times. However, you may feel that the natural beauty (animals, flowers, trees) far outweighs the slower drive.
