Ty, it is a very good orchestra. Bill Robinson is the director and he does a beautiful job. My sons girlfriend played the cello in the orchestra. She loved it so much that during the graduation ceremony this past year she insisted on playing with the orchestra prior to walking for her diploma. Most, if not all, of the seniors did this as they wanted to get to play together one last time.
Being in a school organization is a very good way to make friends at MHS. There are cliques, as with any school, and it is hard for outsiders to break in. These kids here in Maryville have grown up together and it is a tight group. However, it is not impenetrable as my son became a school officer the year after we moved here. The church youth groups are huge here for socialization of the youth.
Best of luck on your move and welcome to Maryville!

I lived there for three years in the late 90's. I still have family there.
It has grown immensely over the last few years. It's a quaint town and people are very friendly. Get used to the pronounciation: "Murrvull" because once you start talking, the locals will ask you, "You're not from 'round here are ya?" LOL
I worked in Sevierville...traffic is quite a mess out there during the busy season. It's still worth living in Maryville than any other surburb of Knoxville. Plenty of shopping and mom & pop stores.
The greenbelt park through the city is very pretty.
Enjoy your move!

Hi Smokymntgal! Well...this is our final week in my hometown of WPB. Im gonna miss the ol' state. I am hoping my life and my daughter's life goes in a more positive direction in Mervil. I know how to bring positives in her life....but I just want her happy. I, however, will be happier here in WPB. But she is my only daughter and I would gladly put my happiness on the backburner for her.
See ya'll when I get there!

We've lived in Maryville for the last several years and love it. The traffic is bad only during certain times of the day and certain days of the year. I work about 8 miles from my home and can get to my office in 15-20 minutes and that's even if I hit the traffic lights when they're red.
Having the college here makes a huge difference and we have the advantage of being so close to the mountains in the eastern part of the county and the TVA lakes in the western part. I also think we have the best library around - imagine, huge, new, and with a coffee shop inside. It's beautiful.
For renting - Moderator cut: realtor advertising is not allowed there are always the classifieds. Our local paper is on line, so you can check the ads for both housing and jobs.
Again, we love Maryville Moderator cut: cut

Maryville Question?????? Please Reply......
i have heard really nice things about maryville tennessee and i was wondering if it is as nice as iv'e heard im looking to move to tennesse im so sick of living in the city
i have two children and want to raise them in a small town with very litle crime and good schools.
my main question is i have mixed race children (black & White) and im wondering would we fit in there?
everyone keeps telling me to move to Knoxville and we would fit in fine because there would be less racisim But i've herad Knoxville is basically a big city???
Do you have any suggestions on a nice fairly small town (not to small ) that would be a nice place to raise children with good schools
Please help me i have been searching for almost a year and it is so hard to get any information....
Thank you

No need to worry, Dalene.
Dalene, strangely enough, this same question was asked by another poster a couple of weeks ago.
One of our local folks stated that Maryville was very progressive and that she did not see any racial tension in the town. I believe she said that she had church fellow-members who were a mixed-race family.
I think that it is mostly a non-issue anywhere in the metro area.
I just did an advanced search using the search option above and one post came up. From - guess who? Gemkeeper! How funny is that?
Dalene, here is the link to that whole thread of bi-racial families being welcomed in the Knox area in general. Read all 4 pages if you can. You will get a very vivid picture of life in this area and feel quite reassured.

i live in maryville, originally from new hampshire, then 20 yrs in florida, so locally known as a "half-back" we have been here about nine years, we are in the kitchen cabinet business, and know many local builders, who do build nice homes, and i can answer some questions about the area, although the traffic has increased, with the many people wanting to move here, its still not as bad as many other places, we live just outside the city limits, in blount county, we really like it here. hope to meet anyone moving here. harrytonygerry

Dalene, I don't think there will be a racial issue for you.
We have several adopting families in our church that have/are adopting children of a different race than themselves, and a few families that are multi-racial. None of them have ever told me that had problems.
As a matter of fact, my hubby and I are beginning the process of foster to adopt children that are in "the system", and we have opted to take in children of any race, whoever God blesses us with.
Love Maryville. So glad we chose to buy here back in Aug 2006.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

Maryville has lovely neighborhoods and homes. Schools are great, and I consider it to be the perfect place to raise a family or to retire. I would love to live there, however; there are not a lot of job opportunities. Homes prices vary a lot depending on where you want to live, however; they are pretty affordable. It is really a nice area! I hope to be able to live there someday! (I would have to commute to work eveyday to Knoxville, though )

Hello I'm new to this board and was just looking around re: Maryville. My future son in law, My Daughter and my grandaughter (3 years old) JUST told us (my husband and I) they were moving and relocating to Maryville Tn. I am so sad by this and all in the same feeling, scared to death to let them go (of course I know I have no choice). So I was just checking out this site and I have seen alot of plus things about your town of Maryville. My husband and I whom live in central Florida, have helped raise our grandaughter who just turned three in june and we are just sick and heartbroken about the news. I guess if we know it is a wonderful and safe place for a family to grow and be raised, then this makes me feel a bit better. Thanks for your input on this as I am skimming these comments by you all. I am originally from Indiana but moved down to Florida 17 years ago and she is our only grandbaby. My husband is having as much as a hard time "letting go" as I am. Bless you all and let me know any pros and cons you can think of.
They are a young soon to be married couple of mid 20's that of course have a 3 year old little very active yet smart little girl. (ok my opinion but true~) ;o) they both work in great jobs. He on computers, my daughter is in management position at an elite southern furniture store. Both are hard workers. Need to know about day care etc... ???? Trustworthy people ...... will be buying a home eventually would like in a safe family community. (remember I'm Grandma) and just want their happiness, but I DO want to be able to sleep at night and know my Grandaughter is safe.
I do like Florida, but seriously in my heart I know it is the best thing for them and do want them to get out of here and find a nice family city/town to settle down in. So much is always going on down here anymore, child abductions, rapes, murders, ......sad... I wish I had been smarter 17 years ago and check the internet before I moved and brought my own children down here. But it just seems things have gotten even more dangerous for our children down here in the last few years or maybe I just see it all now having a grandaughter as I worked all the time but was blessed by having my mother and father watch mine while i was working?!?!
Thank you all and hopefully you will welcome my little grandaughter and her Mommy and Daddy to be with loving open arms when they come to start their new fresh start and beginning of their future for all three of them.
Thanks again.
:O) any suggestions or comments welcome.

Hi Solar Eyz, I can relate sort of to your situation, I raised my Grandaugther for her first 3 yrs and then probably 75% of the rest until she was 15. A few problems arose and I was without her for almost 2 yrs. It broke my heart and I had a bad time. I finally got to see her again but on a limited basis. It was so hard living 5 min from her but not being able to see her so my DH and I decided to move to TN and start living life for ourselves. I cant tell you its not easy(I have been here 10 mths)but we have made it work. I have become very close to my daughter because of it but its still not easy, she is expecting my Grandson in 3 weeks and its the first Grandbaby that I wont be there to see born(I saw all 5 of my others born)
Maryville from what I know and hear is a great town. I live about 20 min from there and go there a lot. I know they will be safe and happy there and that wonderful Grandaughter of yours will grow up in a beautiful place.
Why dont you try to move up this way someday, maybe not the same town as you probably dont want to crowd them but a town like I live in thats close but yet gives them their own space. I was born and raised in FL and never lived any where else for 64 yrs but I am really happy here(do miss my family tho)and its lovely here with a lot to do to keep retired people busy. Just consider it, justs a suggestion, good luck to you though in what ever you decide to do.
