Where are the best areas to relocate around Knoxville?
I would really appreciate any thoughts on areas to relocate to around Knoxville. I have been looking at Maryville and have seen a lot of positive remarks. I have also read good things about Blount County. What about Townsend or Gatlinburg? Gatlinburg schools have high remarks and scores.
Where in Blount County would you suggest? We are looking for:
Great school system
low crime
close to good hospitals and doctors
Employment opp.
Any advice would be great!
Thanks

BlountCo:
Townsend is the more isolated area of the county, as its not near the job centers or the hospital, and is on the way to the Nat'l Park. Townsend schools are part of Blount Co Schools, which overall dont rank well.
The best schools in the county are in the independent school districts of Alcoa city & Maryville city.
There's only 1 hospital in the county, and its in eastern Maryville.
The job centers are probably along Airport Hwy in Alcoa, as well as west (US 411/US321) & downtown Maryville. The medical community seems to be centered on east US 321/Lamar Alexander Pkwy.

Thanks for the information. We are going next week to check out the area. Since I last wrote, I have also been researching Seymour TN. Do you have any advice or knowledge of this area as in comparison to Maryville?

Seymour straddles the Sevier & Blount lines. Its much much smaller than Maryville. There's a Food City in town tho and that area is growing. Some commercial areas on Chapman Hwy (Knoxville) are close by too. The Blount side of Seymour has nice terrain. It falls under BlountCo schools, which again, arent very good. For working in Maryville or Alcoa, Seymour (for Maryville standards) is a hefty commute. But, you're much closer to all the things on Chapman Hwy (Walmart, of course, etc) and a bit closer to Sevierville.

You have been very helpful and I appreciate your input. I love the mountains and want to be able to buy a house that has a mountain view or a house on a little land. That is of course what I wish, what I can get maybe a different story. I don't mind living in a smaller town, but it needs to be close(20-30 minutes) to medical hospitals, or doctor's offices, since that is the field I am in. My husband needs access to neighborhoods and proeperties that people are willing to spend money on lawn maintenance and landscape, since he owns his own business. I live in a small town now, but am close to a big city. A big city that has one of the worst crime rates in the country and I don't want my children planting their roots here. We come to Gatlinburg and the surrounding area every year and want to stay every time we come. My son is starting college and my daughter highschool.I have looked on a web site that compares schools and Maryville City does rank high, but so does William Blount High. The ratings for Heritage High weren't so great, so I thought if I could find something in the city in maryville, or something in the William Blount High School area. Seymour High had good reviews as well as high scores. I guess it will be better once I see everything for myself and time the commutes for both Seymour and Maryville. So, from what I have said( a lot, I know), what do you think?

I think you should come visit! MHS is a great school and the yard business here is what you make of it. Anyone can make it if they are willing to work hard. I have a 1.2 acre lot with over 80 trees on it and landscaping on all 4 sides. I pay a guy $40 plus tax (43.75) to mow and weed eat and blow it all each time. I pay a landscaper guy $10 per hour to do landscape stuff. There is a community hospital here and associated doctors offices. There are major medical centers within 25-30 minutes depending on where you live in Blount County. There are some great community colleges (Pellissippi, Roane, etc.) and of course UT is here for your son. There are also some private colleges, Maryville and LMU. The entire region is wonderful so you can't really go wrong.

Thanks, we are looking forward to seeing the area. We will be visiting next week. I think we could do well with our business there too. We have been very successful where we are and my husband has been doing this for more than 20 years. We have never lost a customer and most of our business is referral. We are looking forward to making a change and getting away from this crime infested area that we live outside of though, for our children's sake. We will concentrate on Maryville and Seymour. Thanks for the encouragement and helpful information.

I just bought a house in Seymour. For a family being in Maryville might be best for the kids as to school. However Seymour is less crowded and yet has everything you need on a daily basis and Knoxville is as close as Maryville. If you are a good parent and watch your children's progress in school, I think that Seymour would be a better area for a family if you don't want to live in the Maryville City school district, if the drive to work is not an issue. Mind you depending on where you live it isn't that big a deal to drive to Maryville or Knoxville.
I did find housing a bit cheaper in some Maryville areas, but not where I wanted to live. Seymour was just more attractive to my wife and i, but a lot of it will be what you need personally.
Taxes are definitely better on Sevier County than in Blount County and NO city taxes at all.

I love Seymour, and would live there if I didn't have children in school. However, most people have told me that if I have kids in school and want to live in Seymour to live on the Blount County side or go to Kodak and live there for the schools. Sevier County is not known for their academics. Everyone has to live somewhere and some of it is what you make of it. My husband works in Sevierville proper (with the locals that complain about Sevier Co schools) and commutes from Maryville. Takes him about 45 minutes going the backroads which are some of the most gorgeous vistas around.
