Maryville is definitely a wonderful town. Relatively quick and easy access to much of what you would like...mountains, shopping, restaurants, FANTASTIC recreational amenities. The school system is top-notch, and housing costs are very affordable.

Regarding supermarkets, you have the Wal-Mart supercenter, as well as Winn Dixie, Food City, Kroger and Bi-Lo. I used to shop at Wal-Mart and Bi-Lo when I lived there.

Believe it or not, you're not going to be inundated with tourists in Maryville itself, so finding a good place to walk is as close as the Bicentennial Park greenbelt right smack dab in the middle of town, across from the library. It was one of my favorite spots in town. It has a great lake, and the trail goes on and on.

And aside from the Smokies, my all-time favorite place to go was the Fort Loudon recreational area near Vonore. It's a bit of a drive, but not too far. Take US 411 south out of the city, and turn left at Rt. 360 (Citico Road) and you'll see it on the left. GREAT views of the mountains in the distance, and a very peaceful place. Has a nice fort to explore and dock right along a lake. My other favorite place was Fontana Dam. Take US 411S to US 129 and turn left. Very pretty drive, but be careful because once you start going up into the mountains, it's very secluded and twisty-curvy. But very well worth the trip.

There's also the Foothills Parkway, which is also accessible from US 129.

Let's see....aside from Foothills Mall, your best best for a decent bookstore is going to be West Knoxville, where you'll find Barnes & Noble as well as Books-A-Million.

You'll find plenty of side-of-the-road fruit and veggie stands throughout the area.

Not sure what else, but I DO know you'll love it in Maryville. I personally would move back, but I'm ready for a more major change of environment, so I'm setting my eyes on the western U.S. Best of luck to you, and enjoy!

Thanks JMT! We are all so excited - having lived in Illinois all our life - it's a big change - but we made a choice to do so before we're 50 so we can enjoy all the beauty and amenities for as long as possible. I'll be posting and hopefully be able to help out in the Maryville questions.

Since our house doesn't close til May 30, we lost a home. As fate has it though, our realtor showed us some beautiful homes in Maryville. For anyone that hasn't visited Maryville, please do. Yes, they have the busy traffic in the city, but the outer area is serenity now. Maryville has everything you need, and then some. We bought a home with an absolute gorgeous mountain view of Chilhowee Mountains in Blount County. We move in on May 31st and we can't wait! Our year long wait which seemed like eternity is coming near for us to move to the lovely state of Tennessee. We're from Illinois with no intentions of trying to change anything but hoping to contribute to the friendliness and economy of the area. Our next step will be to get our 13 year old son involved in the area starting with a church and finding his new school, and of course some new friends. Thanks to everyone for all of your insight.
Good luck with your move to Maryville. It is a nice area, and we love ANY area close to the mountains (for weekend trips anyway)... As far as your son finding a school, I don't know if he is into sports, but Maryville and Alcoa both are very prominent in the high school state playoff games year after year especially in football.

I have a close friends that make Maryville their home. One is attending Maryville College and others are a couple and their children that are very active in Monte Vista Baptist Church there on Old Niles Ferry Road in Maryville. If you are looking for a Baptist church, give them a visit. Our friend, Tim, is the minister of music there and it is quite a treat to hear the music from this congregation. (Be sure to tell him his Robertson County friends say hello!)

Enjoy Maryville....and welcome to Tennessee!

WCRob, thanks so much for serious answers! The more we hear about Maryville the more our instincts seem to be right. It most certainly is pricier than some of the other areas we have looked at, but judging from crime statistics and the lovely pictures some have posted here I think we can easily call it home someday soon.

bbkaren I hope you enjoy the area as much as we did. My only regret is not having enough time to really tour Maryville. We spent 2 days in Tennessee and that included areas from Bristol south through Maryville and up in the Cumberland Plateau and back up through Kingsport, trying to see more of Tennessee than we have previously seen from the interstate on the way through. The areas around Greeneville and Maryville were the ones that called us back!! Of the two towns Maryville was much more appealing, but traveling east towards the mountains either would be wonderful.

LYoda, we are a bit older than you, but part of the reason we have decided now is a good time to make the change is because we still feel young enough to enjoy some of the same things. We intend to be active "almost" seniors for a long time to come. It is a huge step for us as well. Hope we can keep comparing notes as we make the jump.

Never too old to enjoy Maryville or anywhere in Tennessee! I believe everyone walks a little lighter there.

My wife and I hope to be retiring in Tennessee in a few years as well. I have also heard a lot of great things about Maryville. We will be visiting Tennessee in August and we will try to check out the Maryville area. You are correct in that a move to Tennessee from out of state can be a "huge step." I would be interested in hearing how you and others are planning for this move and whether your thoughts about moving are causing worries. Are you leaving family behind? We will be leaving our daughters behind, so I have an uneasy feeling about that, but since I'm originally from the south, I believe I'm going to love living in Tennessee.

We're bringing some family with us - my husband's mom, brother and sister....so we are fortunate there. My sister and husband hope to come in 2 years when he retires. But it is still a huge step having lived in Illinois all our lives and moving our 13 year old son. We're all excited though and plan to make the best of it. Try thinking of not leaving your daughters behind but allowing them an opportunity to come and visit you in your wonderful new state. Who knows....they may want to follow!
