I live in the Powell area. It's fine, but I don't understand the uproar. It's nothing special. The town center consists of a couple of gas stations, convenience store, few other stores, high school, dumping station and railroad tracks. It's not particuarly pretty. There are a few lovely older homes down the road, a beautiful new library. Quite a few subdivisions. That's it.

You really have to go see, but I don't get what the hoopla is all about. It doesn't particuarly touch me. You might want to see before you get yourselves all worked up.

And I have never heard that the schools are the "best of the best."

My daughter goes to Copper Ridge, and it is considered Halls/Powell. It's fine. Not the best of the best. And I think that's the best school in Powell. Not sure, though.

Don't get me wrong. I like it here. But if you think it is all that, you may be in for a let down.

Wink To each his own.

I guess that is why we don't all live in the same place, hiknapster. Beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder.

Relative to major cities, traffic is not really an issue in Maryville/Alcoa. Knoxville is a brisk 19miles away via the Airport Highway, and West Knoxville is within easy commuting distance via the fast moving Pellissippi Parkway. Other than brief sluggishness at the typical rush-hour times, traffic wont impact your standard of living.
Maryville has a varied housing stock, from vintage/victorian in-town homes to 50's ranchers to more current building trends (with growth heaviest on the west-side of town). Alcoa is a more diverse neighborhood with lots of bungalow style 30's/40's era homes. Housing in both cities is nicely clustered around schools. Little to NO public transport exists.

Reasonable local taxes and NO state income tax.

Talking I no longer have a single doubt

I spent Thanksgiving week in Maryville, and ABSOLUTELY fell in LOVE. I have officially stopped traveling the country to find my new home. I just hope people will be receptive to a family from Louisiana trying to escape the madness of post-Katrina NO.

My hubby and I had the same reaction to Maryville area, relo-nurse. We felt instantly at home.

Maryville and its' generous, friendly residents even remind us of our small hometowns that we have missed for many years. So, in many ways it is like coming home again.

I hope you find what you are looking for in your new home.
Do you plan on relocation after graduating from nursing school or are you planning on a transfer to a local school? There are many good medical options in the Knoxville area. The forum is a great source of information on the medical opportunities in the area.

As far as suburban Knoxville towns go, I'd say Powell is at the very bottom. Its basically a widened country road w/ Wal-Marts & Hardees. For more colour, try Townsend or Fountain City.

Wow postman! I am from West Palm Beach and these prices here are OUTRAGEOUS! I gotta get my family outta this joint. We are currently planning to move to Maryville, and I am COUNTING THE DAYS til my child gets outta school!

About 25yrs ago my husband(at the time) now ex and I checked out the Maryville/Knoxville area as a choice to live, well we ended up in NC, but I have always wanted to live there.... I have visited the E Tenn area several times and everytime I go thru Maryville it pulls at my heartstrings. I actually have seen it go thru all of its changes in the years since I have going thru it. It is at its peak, and still going and it has become one of the most beautiful cities in E Tenn........along with Kingsport and its developments. I know someday I will end up there or in Kingsport and I can't wait. Being alone now and only having to consider my own feelings I can live wherever I want.......lol. Although the divorce was unfortunate I can follow my heart now and get a fresh start. I AM going to get there!I put alot of pride in those areas that are becoming so beautiful, and being the PLACE to live.

We've called Maryville/Blount County home for 5 years now. My business, which was dead in Mississippi, has grown constantly since we've been here, even though it is an online business. My husband is a paint contractor, and he hasn't had any lulls in work. We've been renting since we got here, but will be buying after Christmas now that we are sure this is the place for us. I have no complaints whatsoever about Maryville or Blount County.
