I lived in Florida for 2 decades, I shopped at all of the chain stores (we lived on a tight budget & I just love to shop anyway), and I worked for Publix as a teen. Most everyone who has shopped Publix loves it. Someone say something about being employed there. It's been a long time, and I know from back then, it was a nice place to work. I had no complaints, they treated me well, even though I was a nobody. I believe I could have been promoted into management, had I put some years in. I am interested in these new stores opening up in Knoxville. Sure, I'm going to check it out & shop them when they open, but I (& others) want to hear about employment. Can someone clue me in a little, please?

Karma,

I am still waiting word on the Knoxville stores staffing. I am interested in transferring there, but at this point there is very little that can be done.

I have been in touch with the retail staffing specialist for the Atlanta region and he said he will get back to me sometime in the middle of December when there should be more word on how they will be staffing the stores.

I will be happy to pass on any information I can when it is available.

I did have a conversation with a store manager recently and the way he put it, "there is going to be an explosion of stores in that area in a relatively short amount of time"

Interesting comment, although maybe a bit presumptuous, time will tell. The economy would seemingly have to improve substantially for an "explosion" of stores to occur.

Considering the economic climate of the country, Knoxville is in an amazing growth period. However, there is going to be an explosion of stores in the area from all quarters.

Before the word broke, I "heard" that they were looking at 6 locations in Knoxville. 2 surfaced almost immediately ... Northshore & Turkey Creek. It will be interesting to see how many more pop up & how soon. The Northshore location is the one I would be interested in. Any others would be too much of a commute for me & my busy life, at least right now while my kids are still young. LOL I live near Pellisippi in Blount. Don't get me wrong, I love my job. BUT ...

Absolutely, RobertAlton, yes, put the word out if you hear anything, I would REALLY appreciate it

As I said, this came from a store manager that I know and is based on conversations he has had with others in the company.

Certainly his choice of words could be considered a bit presumptuous, but to think Publix is entering that market to open just a few stores would be short sighted. I don't know if 20+ stores over a three year period would qualify as an explosion, but that is what I have heard from several other sources within the company.

As far as the economy is concerned, it has not stopped Publix from opening 22 new stores so far this year with 4 more scheduled. So I would say that 20+ stores in a brand new market would not be outside the realm of possibility.

However, as Karma mentioned, the only official announcement has been for two stores and anything else is speculation.

I think 20 stores in the Knoxville area is being very, very optimistic. Publix has been in the Chattanooga area for years and has only three stores, and Chattanooga is only 100 miles from the Publix distribution center in Atlanta. Knoxville is a bit bigger than Chattanooga and is growing faster, but I think it's being a bit overly optimistic to assume Knoxville can support the same number of Publix stores as Nashville, which is twice the size of Knoxville and growing twice as fast.

You may well be right. I'm just going by what I am hearing. I am not that familiar with Knoxville, but I can tell you this, in a 15 mile radius of where I live in Hudson, FL there are 14 Publix Supermarkets. So it certainly is conceivable that an area as large as the greater Knoxville area could support 20 stores. Please see for yourself http://store.publix.com/publix/cgi/s...apy=&x=48&y=16

As Weisgarber1 said, time will tell.

Actually, growth figures can be skewed any way one wishes, but if one considers Davidson County versus Knox County, a comparable measure rather than an entire metro which isn't necessarily a specific target market, Nashville/Davidson County isn't growing as fast on a percentage basis as Knoxville/Knox County and hasn't for at least the last two censuses, perhaps longer. Total numerical growth for Nash/Davidson was slightly higher because of a higher population base number this census, but percentage growth rate was slower.
