Does anyone know if we need a permit to have a yard sale here in Knoxville? Also, are there any rules about where/how signs can be posted?

Thanks!

No, no permit is needed. Signs are usually on telephone poles rather than trees, but I don't know if there's a law about it.

My friend in Halls had a garage sale today, and her signs kept getting taken down. I could understand if the signs were old. Her neighbor said the same thing happened to her a few months ago. I saw signs on phone polls in Fountain City, is this a Halls thing? no signs allowed? What about other parts of Knoxville? If people can't afford to place an ad, and they're not allowed to post signs in Halls, how do you advertise for it?

If its in the city, it was probably city maintenance. I am very familiar with the drill, being a local musician. Put them at the beginning of the week, maybe Sunday. Thursday or Friday are the removal days. A better idea is to get small yard signs. Ask a neighbor along the main thoroughfare if you may temporarily post in the yard. This seems to be the main method in west Knoxville.

No she doesn't know who took them down, but she knows that some congressman Larry something doesn't like signs up. If it was city maintenance, I still don't understand it. It seems they were only taken down on the main roads, but that's where people need to see them. There aren't any houses, just businesses and churches. Well thanks for the info.

Go to city of Knoxville.org

Three yard sales a year

Gives posting signs guidelines and restrictions on size and timeline

States permit required

Also has application for permit and cost

Hope that helps

See the below post for the city of Knoxville.org

States regulations and guidelines on posting yard sales signs

Also other guidelines for having a yard sale

If being in halls I would suggest maybe city of halls.org

If not go too ask.com type in yard sale guidelines for halls,Tennessee

God Bless

Hope that helps

jmsh-

The OP hasn't been back since 2009 but thank you for posting and welcome to C-D.

I would never advise anyone to go to ask.com for advise on legal matters and city/county ordinances. The best advice would be to contact their local authority in which they reside. It's best to hear it directly from the source and also to get the latest and most up to date laws and information.

Actually, searching for Halls, Tennessee would direct you to the city of Halls, Tn. in Lauderdale County, extreme West Tennessee, bordering the Mississippi River. Halls in Knox County is only a community and not an incorporated city. It is Halls Crossroads, but the word Crossroads is pretty much not used anymore, most people refer to Halls as just Halls and not Halls Crossroads. So, Halls, Tennessee won't work for the Halls in Knox County.
