How much to get license plates (any transfer tax? NC Charges like 3% for those transferring vehicles into the state).

Also, how hard is it to get your driver's license switched over and how much does it cost.

Thanks all!

Landing on the 15th and want to get things taken care of in the correct time line.

If you have a valid, current licenese, you'll just need to take the eye test. I think it's $24 for a 5 year license. It's been awhile since I've had to get one.
For registration, you just need to pay the fee, which is at least $35 a year and possibly more, depending on the county. There's no personal property tax on cars.
Vehicle Title & Registration (http://state.tn.us/revenue/vehicle/index.htm - broken link)
I've gotten liceneses and cars in a lot of different states and Tennessee's is the easiest and cheapest I've ever used. You will need proof of an address but not of insurance so make sure you've got good uninsured motorist coverage.

We just did them recently:

1) Licence: $19.5
2) Title and Plate: $71 (for personalized plate, $35)

For Driver's Licence, make sure you bring enough proof of residence.

The fees for tags and yearly stickers are so cheap here. WE have a dully that we paid 84 a year to run in Florida. We have the same truck and it is only 24 a year. There are some counties around us that have the wheel tax or are planning to get the wheel tax.

Something else you may have already realized... Tennessee is drowning in highway cameras and red light cameras. They enforce their laws about proper driving.

The driver's license fee varies according to the number of years. They are valid for 5 years and how they gauge the fee if I am remembering correctly is if you get it for 5 pay one fee, 4 another,3 another, etc. How they figure it is your age.......if you are 20 then you get 5 years till 25, if you are 22 you get it for 3 years, 24 1 year....all basing around the 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, etc. That is how it was two years ago and I think still the same.

I believe Hamblen County is one of those with the high wheel tax?
I pay $24 a car, no matter what kind, size, age, etc. in Washington Co. Well except the one car we have the eagle tag on, that is $35 extra per year, but we like to support the eagles.

Long answer is "yes" as well, Bones.

You have 30 days from the time you move here according to the government website:

New Residents

There are links to the places you can go to to obtain the drivers license and you will have to surrender your old license when you use it for ID in the process of getting the new one. They list the ID and other paperwork you will need to bring with you and there are links to the right offices for your town. You will also have to get your visioned screened as part of the same process so make sure you bring glasses or wear your contacts if you need them!
