Thanks for getting us back on topic Laura. I would love to see your photo, I didn't even think to do that, but it was dark down there. I don't know about that ground beetle - it doesn't look "Volkswagy" enough - round enough. Also can't tell by the photo how big it is. It definitely wasn't a cockroach.

Bless that dung beetle. And bless them British Beatles. I don't wanna see any others.

Most likely it was a stag beetle. I found out as a kid that they can pinch pretty hard, but they're otherwise harmless and, IMO, very cool-looking:

Add me to that group. Triple the fun for the skeeter!
Which beetle is eating the leaves on trees? Or, is there more than one variety?

I hardly saw any bugs in the first few summers here. This year was the first time I've been bitten by a mosquito. I'll try the dryer sheets, too. TN as nothing on FL when it comes to big bugs or massive, biting mosquitoes, though.

It was definitely not a stag beetle, but thanks for the offer.

I believe it is the tiny pine beetles that kill the trees. But if you mean eating leaves, not killing, then I don't know.

When I went out Wednesday morning it was in the same place so it must be dead. I was out all day and didn't get back until dark but in thinking about it, instead of getting a shot looking down at the bug, I probably should have tried from the side because that's when it looks more VW beetle. I just don't have enough photos on the memory card, yet, to download them. If it's still there, I'll try for a different view.

what a funny name ... sounds scary ... that looks a little more like it ???
I'm sure I would know it if I saw one again in person, but on the computer screen it's just not happening for me.

Is this it? I've seen a few of these outside, but tonight is the first time it came into the house.
I don't know what to do with it. Good bug? Bad bug?
It's 1.75 inches long and the antenna are freakin' me out. It also looks like there are pinching pinchers on it's face.
Sorry the pic is kind of blurry. It's on the move. (PS the white spot is from my camera, it doesn't have a white dot on it's back).
