Since no one has told you, you are probably in the wrong forum. This forum is for Knoxville threads. More general questions like your questions are better posted in the plain Tennessee forum.

my family and I relocated to Knoxville from South Florida after being hit by 4 major hurricanes and in search for a smaller community. The area is absolutely breath taking in beauty, the weather is amazing, you get to taste all seasons but just a little bit of each. After a year our little town blues have melted away and we're planning to head back to good ole Florida. Why? We're bored to death. The re are 2 malls (that we know of) and neither has impressed me. The people are all very nice, but it has been a total cultural shock. We have not been able to adjust to the Southern culture which is not to say anything negative about it, just very different to what we are used to. They don't sweat the small stuff, it seems you can't get anything done on Fridays as most places (doctors, business) are closed, etc. They may be doing it right by taking it easy, but I'm an urgency addict with a S.FL-NY mentality and it's not working for me. In addition, I am Cuban and when this is revealed they seem to be under the impression that all Cubans came to the US inside innertubes. My family flew in to Miami in the late 60's but it seems no one here knows there were flights from Havana to Miami back then and I find myself having to tell my life story so no one thinks I'm an illegal. Again, they're nice people but totally different lifestyle than what we're used to in South Florida or NY. If you're planning to move to the area you'll need to accept that Knoxville is not by any definition a big city at all. We thought different and like you wanted to have a house in the offskirts and then be near city, it ain't happening here.

Wow---ouch
Wellllllll, I was not going to respond to this--But I just have to---
First of all "littletownblues"---I am offended and have taken this personally.
OK, admittingly, I probably shouldn't. But I did.
To ALL---If you are moving from somewhere to here--Knoxville TN area, do not expect the glitz and glamour of the huge cities you are coming from.
If you choose to come here--Come to enjoy the friendly people and be friendly yourself also--realize that stores close earlier then what others have gotten used to in our "gotta have it now society" and enjoy the simple fact of the beauty and--Slower pace---
Realize there is a reason it is NOT like FL or NY. And those are the exact reasons people are flocking here.
I am from Minneapolis MN and my fiance is from Philly. Yes,,Yankees.
We spent the last 3.5 years in Florida-No, FL was not for us.
We came here because it was small--because the stores close at a decent hour so people can go home to be with their families, because the people are so friendly, because we were not after the same things in the places we were from or where we just moved from---
We came to Knoxville to be part of Knoxville. To add to Knoxville. To add to Tennessee. We did not come here to change it into what we moved from. We came here because of who and what it is.
To everyone moving to Knoxville (300 per month Knoxville proper) because you are fleeing from the nightmare you now live in and hate--(like we did),
Come here to enjoy the quiet neighborhoods(ours shuts down about 8:30pm)--Come here to enjoy something simpler---Come here to sit out on your porch and have the neighborhood kids just come by to talk. (we live in LincolnPark). Come here to go for a drive to see all the greenery---Come here to sit and listen to the wind blow through the trees as you have your beverage out on your porch--Come here to enjoy the fun, food and events that do go on around town and enjoy them just for exactly what they are meant to be,,,,,relaxing and enjoyable.
Come here to be a part of the friendliness and beauty of Tennessee.

I'm sorry if anyone was offended. I didn't think I was saying anything bad about the people or culture, just not what we're used to and not what we like, but I'm sure there are others who love it. The person from FL was asking about moving near a big city and living in the country on the offskirts of the city, that's what we had in mind, but Knoxville was not the big city we expected. No disrespect intended, just not for us.

No need to throw us out with a "crude" (by your own definition) cliche, we're on the way out on our own. I'm sure more folks will come here and just love it, just not for us. That's why Revlon makes over 400 shades of nail polish, because we all have different and diversed taste. We just didn't think there would be such a drastic change in the way of life, not to say one is good and the other bad, just totally different. I hope we can agree on that. We have found the people here very nice and courteous; that's why I don't understand the reaction my original post has generated. Some people are going to love your home town, others are not, deal with it. It is not personal nor is it an attack on the city or its people, it is just an opinion. I'm sure many of you have your own opinions of Miami and NY and I'm sure not all of you agree on that either. No hard feelings, I hope.

Littletownblues, I for one appreciate you coming here and posting your views and situation and explanation as to why TN is not for you. Maybe it will help others who have the same likes and dislikes find a place they might like better than TN without having to find out like you did. I know moving is an expense. You are right, It is not for everyone, what place is? Differences are what makes this world go round. You are right, there is NO reason for anyone to be rude or nasty to you because you are being honest.
I respect you for your honesty, both on here and with yourself. Some who have moved here thinking it would have streets paved with gold and every person they cam across would be at their beck and call for all of there whims find out it is not that way, come on here bashing the whole state and saying everyone on this forum lies. So knowing that, I very much appreciate your views of even though it is nice, it is just not for you. That is very honest of you and I for one appreciate you, wish you all the best and hope that you do find that place that is just right for you and your family.

I am not offended. You were not rude in anyway. You were relating your experiences. That could be helpful to someone else.
How many times have I said that living here is a lifestyle change for many people? How many times have I said that not everyone will like it? Don't come here if you are must looking for a cheap house?
Knoxville is incredibly different than Miami. In fact Knoxville is different than a lot of places.
I can't believe that people would be upset that someone is being honest. Isn't that what this forum is for?
I'm offended that people would be that rude because someone graciously explained why Knoxville didn't work for them.

I think you did a great job in explaining why Knoxville wasn't for you without insulting anyone. While I'm sorry Knoxville isn't your cup of tea, I'm glad you're doing something about it and not staying here to whine about it (which is what a lot of people seem to do).
Best of luck to you.
