Default Why is Maryville so junkie?

We wanted to move to Maryville and just spent three days trying to find a nice clean affordable house or condo to rent (around $600-800) for awhile untill we buy. Its seems impossible, Everything that is in that price range is ethier a dump, full of trash, or near enough to another house dump full of trash. Why doesn't Maryville clean up these neighborhoods? Why do they just let people pile junk all over their yards? We are at the point that now we either have to forget maryville all together or buy a condo somewhere in a clean part of town (the few that are out there) I thought this town had great reviews?

Also Renters if people ask you if the area is clean when they call, don't lie to them and say yes and waste each others time. Clean is not a neighborhood with Junkie yards, or run down houses all around. I had this happen with almost every phone call.

Obviously Maryville isn't junkie, based on others comments, both residents and transplants alike. Perhaps you would find Waynesville, N.C. more to your liking, as one of your other posts indicated.

I'm not trying to put Maryville down, it gets good reviews from many people I'm just really frustrated trying to find a decent place when the town is suppose to be so good. It just seems that there should be a law that would make people clean up these places. The people in Maryville are so nice and the Renters I've talked to are so nice but its like they are blind to the Junk around them and pay no attention to it? When you drive around Maryville you don't see it much, Most stores are clean and well kept, its when you start to go back in the neighborhoods that it starts to show. I know a lot of people like the town and i myself like the town, I'm just wondering how it can be so junkie in so many places. I'm not the only one on here who has question the looks of some of the neighborhoods in Maryville on these forums. Is there a part of town i should be focusing on or a part to completely avoid?

It not just Maryville either i Talked to realtor in town and she pretty much explained that you just have to over look it. "You have to drive though the bad to get to the good" She has a friend who owns lake property towards Knoxville (million dollar homes) and they have to drive through trashy neighborhoods to get to their home. That to me just seems ridicules and the state and county should do something.

Going to be honest with you here, this is regard to most East TN towns, not just Maryville. I am sure you liked seeing the property tax rates here and it had some impact on your choice to move to TN right? Well, if you then move here and want to see ordnances and such requiring people to live a certain way, or have their property look a certain way guess what? Property taxes will have to go up to put into place and enforce those ordnances. The more rules and regulations, the higher the taxes is just pretty much how it works. So a lot of local folks aren't exactly happy with how a house, property, neighborhood may look, however if they push to have it changed, two things will pretty much be guaranteed to happen: 1. The taxes will go up and 2. They will have quite a few people mad at them because their taxes went up. Those friendly Tn folks may not be so friendly any more to the squeaky wheel.
TN is pretty much a live and let live kinda place.
As far as finding a rental in your price range that is pristiene....not sure about Maryville specifically, but in other areas, you would have to either increase your monthly rate to find a "nicer" area or stay in that price range and over look a lot. One of those cake and eat it too kind of things I guess.

Well that makes since, thank you. Paying higher taxes never made anyone happy. lol As to increasing the rental rate, if you go over 1000 a month then there are a few nice places to pick from that is why we are considering buying a condo or townhouse because it would be cheaper per month and could be a rental later for us or it would be easier to sell later when we settle on a house.

Folks in East Tennessee don't appreciate being told what to do with their property by anybody, especially not any form of government.
If you insist on moving here, look in Tellico Village or far west/Farragut for gated communities with restrictive Home Owners Associations.
As was mentioned, you won't find what you're looking for in the price range you're looking at. You need to go to $1,000 or more a month.

Sometimes I speak my mind a little too freely. I hope this thread doesn't offend anyone. I don't mean to insult anyone in Maryville I know most people are clean feindly people who care about their homes and business. I feel sorry for those people beacuse I know they feel the same way as I do and don't understand why people don't have any more self respect for themselves. Its their home, keep it decent looking it doesn't take money to pick the trash up off your lawn.

I love TN because of the scenery (great smokies) and the friendly people. You will not find that in those states you speak of. It looks like i'll have to do as the Realtor stated. "You have to drive through the bad to get to the good" and overlook it if I decide to still move to Maryville. Its just sad that you need higher taxes to make SOME people have a little self respect for their home.

I see some disconnect here.

There are a lot of people in this world that have a lot of self-esteem AND junk cars on their lawn. Just because that is your priority, it doesn't mean that it is theirs.

The people and this area don't believe in much government regulation, if any. You can't move into a conservative state and expect it to change for you.

You can certainly have your views and the people of this area will respect them, but don't judge other people because the people will not tolerate it. This is a very non-judgemental place and it is very popular for that reason.

What I really don't understand is why someone would expect to pay such a low rent but want everything to meet their standards. Did you maybe think we were "low-rent" to begin with?

Again I'm sorry to be so blunt. I'm starting to understand a little bit more on how the area works now.

(BTW, word to the OP: "junkie" means a drug addict or someone with an insatiable craving for something, such as a baseball junkie. "Junky" means trashy.)

In all of the posts made about Maryville, I don't recall any of them ever saying that Maryville is cheap. We've heard that Maryville has excellent schools (it does), that Maryville has lots of shopping (it does), that Maryville is in a beautiful setting (it is) and that the people are wonderful (they are). But I don't think anyone has ever said that it's also cheap.

So I agree with the others. I think the OP had some pretty unrealistic expectations.
