Yes, there is an auto zone and Wal-mart in Rogersville, however it is also a small town, much removed from much of anything else (Kingsport is 45 minute drive one way and Morristown is an hour drive the other way.) it has a high unemployment rate and every last local will be hired there before an "outsider" at any job that does not require a degree of some kind. I have also heard of where they will hire a local with out a degree before the non local with a degree for a job that should require a degree. It is a very political little town. Very nice, very pretty historic place, my parents live there and I spend quite a bit of time there. However the schools are not that great, they seem to have more crimes against others (house vandalisms, break in of cars in parking lots kind of crimes) in that little town than they do in much larger Kingsport, so not really sure if Rogersville is what you are really looking for. If you were a young retired person, I would say yes, Rogersville might be a good fit, but in your case, not so much. You asked for opinions, I gave mine.
I agree with Pam and Bill, you need to focus less on the house prices, more on the work and taking the time to visit all the different areas you have in mind or are even considering.
And getting a bit pissy with those trying to answer your questions, even when there is a lot of deciphering involved with the wording, is really not going to get you as much help as possible. I am just saying is all.
One thing you will learn quick when you do finally get to move to TN is the please and thanks you's will go a long way.

I'm getting pissy what so ever I'm just letting people know where I'm coming from and I always say thank you on my post.I don't understand how people can smash windows out of cars and things like that.I a simple person I would want to get along with people but I don't see that happening if people would start to bust windows and things like that.

Well if no one answers you with your attitude, now you'll know why. Asking for help is one thing. Asking questions that you can google and find the answers yourself is another. That's called research and if I or anyone else on this forum researches your question on google, then we are doing the work for you. Enough said.

You might not be able to find all of that. East Tennessee real estate is generally dirt cheap, but at 70K for a 3-BR, you're buying an older or somewhat run-down house or maybe a double-wide trailer in a rural area or small town. Which is fine, except the schools in those areas tend not to be the best. In East TN, the best schools tend to be in the cities like Knoxville, Johnson City, and Kingsport. However, if by "safety" you mean you want to veer away from the city schools, then, maybe the rural county schools are a better option anyway. (As far as drugs go, you're not going to totally get away from that, even in the rural areas --- not in TN, not in WV.)

The education issue aside, your best bets in NE Tennessee are probably places like Elizabethton/Watauga, Greeneville, Church Hill, and Jonesborough. Rogersville, as you mentioned, is probably not that bad of a pick, either. If you're really looking to be closer to the amenities of a small city, though, Rogersville might be a pain compared to the other places I mentioned. If you're looking to be as far away from the city, as possible, while still being with some minor business activity, Rogersville is not a bad pick.

Maynardville is the same deal as Rogersville; it's kind of middle-of-nowhere, which might be what you're looking for. It's about 40 minutes from Knoxville, so for a "middle of nowhere" place, it's not an unbearable drive to a decent sized city. I imagine Union County schools don't rank high in quality, though.

This is twice he's been given the recommendation to do some research and not ask so many questions. Multiple times he's gotten upset with people who suggest he do a little leg work, so to speak, of his own. Actually, any time he's not answered in the way he deems proper he gets irritated. I sure hope this young guy doesn't bring that attitude to TN- it could make for a very lonely life there.

Alright,I haven't been negative to anyone. I'm sorry if I made anyone mad or angry but I just wanted to know what people around the areas thought.I have reseached but I don't want to base my life because one person says on sites.I just wanted to know what other people thought.I've never been to any of these places and I don't know how to look and see if there is a lowe's,wal-mart and places like that in Rogersville,Maynardville, and other places I've been asking about.I'm not great on the computer so it is hard for me to look these things up.I never meant to make any of you mad or upset with me.I'm just trying to ask people in TN about places and what they think.I'm sorry.I won't ask anymore questions and do the reseach as best as I can. Thanks Agian for all the help that yall haven give to me,God Bless.

As a mother of five, and also a person that has made a lot of mistakes, I strongly urge you to go back to school. You are very, very young, which is good. Your life hasn't really begun, yet.

But at this point, someone with a bachelors degree doesn't qualify for a very good job. It sounds like you are interested in forestry. Major in that and one day you could have a good paying job with benefits working in The Great Smoky Mountains.

It sounds like your girlfriend is heading down the correct road. She will be an accountant and you will work at Auto Zone? No. I'm sorry to say that life doesn't usually work that way.

Either way, you need that degree so you might as well go ahead and get it.

Please, please go back to school and make this mom happy, okay?

Matt,

To google anything, go to Google and type in for example:

AutoZone store locaters, hit enter, then click on your choice of what you are looking for, usually a good rule of thumb is the first 5 choices are the most popular. It may take a few tries to find the information you want. The more you use google and research, the better you'll get at it. I'm self taught on the computer and by using the internet I learn as I go. Most information is out there, you just have to use different words in your search to find things.
In defense of what Hiknapster posted, I took what she wrote as a valid concern for your well being. She wants better for you out of life and not a job that will not get you further in life. That's the name of the game is to strive to make oneself better. Bettering oneself can be acheived by educating oneself about many things and learning from others when they are trying to help you. Getting angry and defensive never helps. Chill and bite your tongue and decide if what someone tells you has any merit before you get defensive and fire back.Especially on a forum that is all about opinions.
Pam

I never meant to upset you.

First of all, you need to get a college education in order to have a better career. If your family does not have much money, then you can apply for grants and financial aid. I was not so fortunate. I didn't qualify for anything, due to my parents income, but they were not willing to help. You have the ability to get help.

What I meant is that eventually your girlfriend will have a fabulous job making great money and you will feel very badly because you do not have your degree and only qualify for low-paying jobs. It's just what happens.

You have been on here asking about where to rent, eventually buy a house and raise children. But you have to first start with what you want to do with your life. How will you make a living? What is your passion? The rest of those things will come once you have that in order.

Once again, we have been incredibly kind to you, spending our time helping you. I know that I have enjoyed researching things for you. I don't understand why you are so angry at us. We really want you to do well.
