Default Cades Cove

I want to save you all a too-soon trip to Cades Cove. I went this morning, 10/16/09, (raining on and off, foggy on the mountain) and suggest that you wait one more week if you are thinking of going to see Fall foliage. I picked out 2 photos taken today, not because there is anything special about them but they should give you a good idea of how far along the leaf color is/isnt as of 10/16/09. I did not go to higher elevations in the park but you can see the mountain in the second photo still looks pretty green.

How much traffic is there in Cades Cove these days. When my wife and I tried going in June, we were surprised by the amount of cars (I wasn't thinking about it being summer vacation). My wife seriously started freaking out because we were stuck in that one way, one lane loop where you can't turn around, not to mention the cars were at a dead stop most of the way because people were just stopping there cars to take pictures of wildlife instead of pulling over to the side and take pictures. Anyway, it took us a good 2+ hours to just get through the loop that day.

Is it like this now? When is the least trafficked time to go to Cades Cove?

I have found the best time to go to Cades Cove for non traffic is January to April for a generalization. Best time for beautiful scenery in my opinion is latter part of October or May. Spring and fall are just gorgeous. Lots of bear sightings this year and yes, cars pull over for those pictures. I call it wildlife sightings, scenic sightings, and people sightings. People are fun to watch there too. Don't expect to have a short trip there if you really want to enjoy it. 2 hours is a minimum with traffic. It's wonderful getting out and walking around. Take a picnic basket with you and just relax and enjoy the views. And don't forget your camera.

A trip to the Smokies just isn't complete without a drive through Cades Cove!

I heard they were repaving the roads and adding little pull offs so people can sight see a bit without holding up traffic.
