What area? What area? Still banging my head on the wall!
Okay here's the deal. Hubby and I are set for another run to Knoxville from Illinois the weekend of November 6-8. We're going to look around Maryville area and maybe up around Seymour. But I wonder if I may be missing something around the outer area of Knoxville, not in the city itself. I want a more rural flavor but not too far out from whatever we want. I don't want to be crammed into a side by side subdivision. We like a small to medium size town where maybe you can actually get to know locals instead of just being another person in that county. Our price range really shouldn't go over 160ish, preferably less of course. Since I don't know all these different "areas" I'm not sure where to stay away from and why. Just county with no city taxes would be great so that means outside of any city limit for us. I have read and read on this forum about different areas and have filtered some areas out but there is still so many left!
I have looked on the real estate sites on the internet until I'm blue in the face. I see stuff I like but it's either too far out probably (found one I love in Sevier county but it's not close to anything but Sevierville mainly) and I don't want to be caught in all the touristy stuff, traffic etc. Please give me some areas around Maryville that is worth checking..I've heard Chilhowee View area maybe? I would like to get a real estate person involved at some point but I think i should have an area of East Tennessee narrowed down I think to make his/her job easier! I'm REALLY getting overwhelmed here.
We'd like to stay around the Knoxville area within reason because we have the only friends we know over there that live in Farragut right now and wouldn't want to travel an hour or more to spend time with them.

My suggestion
is that, since you don't have your "heart set" on one particular area, you should rent for a while. For those who have always owned their home, this may not sound like a good idea, but it can be much, much worse to purchase a home and later discover you either don't like the area you chose or wish you had bought somewhere else. It's practically impossible to get a true picture of how different areas are until you live here. Good luck on your move

I don't have my heart set on an area yet because I still need to do some looking to find that area. We're not moving just yet, but trying to find definite areas we need to check. Our trip in November will let us see the surrounding Maryville area and up into Seymour too. But Maryville area is pretty big, just didn't know if there was one side that is better than another. I don't want to waste my time driving one whole side when i shouldn't have been there to begin with.
We have discussed renting if it comes right down to it and we haven't found what we wanted. It can be very hard to know where to look and where to stay away from for all different reasons. I know I have lived here all my life and finding out those things sometimes takes years. I don't want to rent for years.
But I don't want to buy in the wrong area either.

What kind of things do you want to be close too? What stores that you know are in Knoxville that you want a short drive too? Do you want to be close to UT? A Library? Parks? Water? Giving a little more info about what you like to do or need to do in an average day would really help get some more pin pointed opinions.

We want to be within 10-15 minute drive of everyday things like grocery, gas station, Walmart , rent a movie, get a pizza, that kind of thing. But within about 30 minutes of bigger shopping when needed, or just about anything we don't do on a regular basis. We want to be outside the city limit for tax purposes, we like peaceful settings...not a lot of screaming kids and especially uncontrolled barking dogs! We have two small dogs ourselves and don't let them stand out in the yard and bark all day and night. But really, just a rural setting where houses aren't your main view. We both ride motorcycles and love those roads over there, we like to fish a bit, kayak or canoeing if near enough to water, I like to read and frequent libraries for books. My husband is semi-retired but would like part time work of some sort, I am a dental hygienist and will plan on applying for my TN license and possibly working maybe as a temp or something to allow for more time for hubby and I to do things without having to not be able to because of a permanent job. So not being too far away from possible work is a definite consideration. We really enjoy just putzing around landscaping our yard and then sitting and watching the grass grow with nice scenery.

I moved to Seymour to avoid the traffic of Knoxville, Maryville and Sevierville. I am about equal distance to each, but do not have to deal with the traffic on a daily basis. Everything you need is here and it is about 20 minutes to most things not available. very LOW property taxes thanks to the tourists. Lower than Blount or Knox counties. Check it out, it may fit.

Seymour is definitely on my list for this upcoming trip on the advice of more than one person on here. I have been researching that area a little already so when I get there I can make better use of my time than getting lost!
I'm trying to get this one house I seen with a Sevierville address on the internet out of my mind, because I think that particular house is more in the hills and a bit far out for us, but it sure looks appealing. I don't want the craziness of tourists and traffic so I better look around the Seymour area.

Why get it out of your mind? It just might be THE ONE. There is a reason that it is staying with you.
There are lots of ways to avoid traffic in Sevierville and lots of the area is no where near the tourists. It will depend about the hills. It may or may not be on flat land. Are you trying to avoid hills altogether or are you just saying that it looks like a long ways from civilization?

Maybe give Roane County a look? For your immediate needs, there's a Walmart in Rockwood. And it's about a 30 minute drive to Turkey Creek.
