Operating Room Nurses
My wife and I are both Operating Room Nurses. We are looking to retire in the eastern TN area in about 7 years. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding good retirement areas nearby larger hospitals (30 mi one way) where we might look for employment (full time for the wife, part time for me) that may be in (near) the mountains? Lakeside would be nice, but I've read that most lakes in TN have huge level changes due to TVA regulation. A nice mountain cabin near a babbling brook/creek would be ideal. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Look North of Knoxville. There's a brand new hospital in Powell, part of Mercy (Baptist/St. Mary's) that's right off the Interstate. You can live north of there in the mountains and still be 30 minute or less from there with an easy drive.
Our Hospitals
Possible small towns would be Jacksboro, Norris, Clinton, Caryville and others. There's a beautiful lake up that way, Norris Lake. Not sure if it has the same drawdown problems as the other. Lake Cherokee east of Knoxville is probably the worst for level changes. TVA's website can give you more information.

Good luck in contacting a recruiter at Mercy. There is only one recruiter listed on the website and she does not return her emails. Ever! No one responds to the "Contact Us" section of the website either. Out of all of the hospitals I applied to, Mercy Health Partners was the worst in regards to timely call backs. Their whole recruiting/employment system needs to be scraped and over hauled. Covenant Health Employment Services is much better. Here is a list of hospitals and medical centers in East TN.

As a patient, I love Mercy. But I've also been to Fort Sanders, too, and it was great. We have very good hospitals, here. Of course, working at one is completely different.
Norris Lake does not really draw down. Douglas Lake is the one that turns into a huge mud puddle. There is also the possibility of going to West Knoxville or anything along the Tennessee or Loudon Lake. All of the above suggestions are great, too. You really can't go wrong.
I think that you will find that you are going to have lots of places to choose from because we have it all, including a fabulous medical community. The best I've ever seen. It will also depend on your budget.
Gosh, seven years is a long time, but I understand. It's always good to plan ahead; get a feel for the area.

I believe the Mercy Health Partners are part of the one in Newport too and they are god awful. They keep losing doctors at the Baptist Hospital there because of mismanagement.....
