North Knoxville
Can anyone tell me about North Knoxville? We like older homes and have found a few on the web. Most of what we have found are very inexpensive and in the Real Estate areas of 104,105,106. Are these high crime areas? Why so inexpensive? Thanks

Area 105 is very high crime, and 104 and 106 is less. I see you are from N'awlins, so you would definitely not think 104 and 106 was any big deal. Who knows, maybe 105 wouldn't even be a big deal to you, but I would definitely not recommend moving there.

thanks for the info. Yes I think it would be a big deal. I'm actually from an area about 40 mi. north of the city, but I grew up and attended high school there. The corruption here is unbelievable. Can you recommend another area that may be more established with older homes?

When it comes to Knoxville, just follow the advice of Tupac: "West side is the best side".
If you're looking for an older home, Sequoyia Hills has some beautiful ones, but very pricey. If price is an issue, there's also the Bearden area and several neighborhoods off Middlebrook Pike. Go out past toward Cedar Bluff and Farragut and it's nice, but the homes are more cookie-cutter McMansion types.
Fountain City is a quaint little area north of town with some nice older homes. Make sure, however, that the houses you're looking at are actually IN Fountain City. There are some surrounding areas that aren't nearly as nice, and realtors selling houses there like to claim Fountain City.

I just want to back up everything that Pimpy says. Great advice.
It's hard to tell what people will like, because you have to know what they are use to.

I have absolutely no idea what those areas are. But I live in North Knoxville and have experienced ZERO crime. I'm in a neighborhood that is roughly bordered by Broadway to the west, Whittle Springs to the east, I-640 to the north, and Washington Pike to the south. It's a fantastic neighborhood with older homes, nice neighborhood parks, and a pride in one's neighborhood that you don't find in bland cookie-cutter subdivisions in posh West Knox.

JMT, thanks for the insight. I am not too familiar with the area, but from what I gather you are in the Linclon Park North Hills, area. If so why are there so many homes at such low prices? I 've been told that most realtors want buyers to look west. I like the old "Bungalow" style home and have found many in the area that I have described above. What is your take

JMT: Area 105 is the Magnolia area. I can't remember which, but one of the other two was your area.
I'm not trying to discourage anyone from moving there. Believe me, in the final analysis, I decided that just wasn't where I wanted to live. I belong to the 37917 group, and I read constantly about car break-ins, drug dealers and prostitution. It is NOT the ghetto by any means, but it is a city area, and has problems.
I've tried finding a neighborhood break-down of crime, but haven't been successful, yet.
Once again, if you are use to cities, then Knoxville crime will seem relatively low. I'm just not, and that's my own personal thing. I like living out in the middle of nowhere, which would probably drive some people crazy!
I do see crime rising, lately, though.
